Yesterday (February 27) we brought you the news that star Nathan Fillion is assembling the Serenity Stones, gathering together cast member from the beloved FOX sci-fi show Firefly for some unknown purpose. All those 24 hours ago, we speculated it was for his podcast Once We Were Spacemen, which he co-hosts with also-Firefly star, Alan Tudyk. Well, we were wrong. Gorram wrong.
In a new video posted so soon after our previous article that it seems like a direct response to me, personally (I don’t have a parasocial relationship with the cast of Firefly, what are you even suggesting), Fillion “recruits” Sean Maher, who played ship’s doctor Simon Tam on the series. Similar to previous videos with Gina Torres (who starred as Zoe Alleyne Washburne) and Morena Baccarin (who was Inara Serra on the show), it’s light on details, and mostly takes the form of “we doing this” and “it’s happening” and variations on that.
But the most important piece of info is the caption on Instagram (or TikTok): “Some of you have guessed convention, podcast, or cross-over. You are wrong.”
While the latest post is still a collabo post with Once We Were Spacemen, indicating either they really want to pump up those audience stats for the pod or Fillion is — what’s the word — lying, let’s play this out for a second.
I probably could have eliminated “convention” from that list immediately regardless, as the Joss Whedon created cult series already has non-stop “reunion” panels of different sorts all the time, and even an official-ish 20th anniversary panel with Fillion, Summer Glau (who played the mysterious River Tam), Torres, Tudyk (who played pilot Hoban “Wash” Washburne), and Sean Maher back at Emerald City Comic Con in 2025 (though that was for the movie spinoff, Serenity). Regardless, hyping up a convention reunion at this level when these dudes hang out all the time isn’t that big of a deal.
As for “cross-over,” Fillion’s drama The Rookie is doing a weird crossover episode with Dropout’s Game Changer coming up, so since the show is in its stunt era, it seems reasonable to think having a mini (or maxi) Firefly reunion on the long-running series could make a lot of sense. This still seems possible as it technically wouldn’t be a crossover episode, but it would be many of the cast-members of Firefly all in the same place at the same time, whether they’re playing themselves or not.
As for “podcast,” I honestly don’t quite believe Fillion here, just because of the collabo posts. My best guess on that front is that it’s some combo of two of these: a live podcast recording of Once We Were Spacemen with a good chunk (if not all) of the Firefly cast on stage. So, not exactly a podcast, not exactly a convention appearance… But not the full-on Firefly revival that Fillion and friends seem to be teasing.

The thing is: the podcast reunion isn’t being teased here – because it’s already been announced. With the exception of Baldwin, ALL of them will be at AwesomeCon doing a Firefly panel on March 15th, when they will be recording a live episode of “Once We Were Spacemen.”
So that’s not what they’re teasing – it’s just the forum for whatever the announcement IS.
