‘The Pitt’ Goes The Distance To Not Sensationalize Sexual Assault In Season 2, Episode 7

Katherine LaNasa on The Pitt Season 2

The Pitt has been lauded many, many, many times over its season and change for responsibly and accurately depicting life in a hospital. And the latest episode on HBO Max, Season 2, Episode 7, is no different as — spoilers past this point — charge nurse Dana Evans (Katherine LaNasa) meticulously and carefully works with a sexual assault victim to log evidence. But what makes this plot point stand apart is that unlike the majority of times this storyline is depicted on television, it has virtually nothing to do with the person accused of assault, and everything to do with the person who was assaulted.

Now in Hour Seven of yet another long day in the Emergency Department, Dana gets recruited early to take care of the sexual assault victim. We’re told they called PAAR (Pittsburgh Action Against Rape) and an advocate is on the way. While the nurses suggest waiting for a SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner), Dana thinks that since it’s a holiday (this season takes place on July 4th) the patient will have to wait all day — and since Dana is a SANE, she’ll take the case while Princess (Kristin Villanueva) takes charge of the, er, charge desk.

Dana grabs new nursing school graduate Emma Nolan (Laëtitia Hollard) as well as Dr. Al-Hashimi (Sepideh Moafi) and explains what’s involved in being a SANE on the way: they do forensic exams, collect evidence, and hand it over to the police “if a report is made. we also provide resources, support, sometimes even testimony.” Dana continues, adding that “SANEs are very valuable in a hospital, especially an ED. More nurses should train for it.”

Ilana Miller (Tina Ivlev) — the victim — is already waiting in triage, and it’s clear as soon as the trio arrive that this will be handled with care. They simply explain what their roles are, and there’s no hand-wringing, proselytizing, or over-dramatics… It’s presentational, about making the victim feel safe without making them feel bad. And they also make sure once Ilana asks how long things are going to take that it’s her schedule, not theirs.

I won’t beat by beat through every bit — as Dana explains, “this can be a lot” — but from finding a private room to making Ilana feel comfortable as they ask her to strip and check her body, none of this gets into the lurid details, and none of it is about the assault; time and again, the episode’s storyline focuses on Ilana, and what she’s going through.

“You are in control now, Ilana,” Dana tells her, right at the top of the exam. “We’re here to help and support you.”

The lone moment of dramatization is when Ilana backs away from reporting the crime, and takes a walk with Emma to get a snack. Dana, left alone, crumples. Look, I don’t want to make any leaps here, but according to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, “One in five women in the United States experienced completed or attempted rape during their lifetime.” Whether Dana has been a victim herself or as a SANE has had to live through these experiences over and over, it’s clear that she’s an expert, but still feels every moment of what’s happened. As a viewer, it’s the release we need because we’ve also been holding in these emotions the entire time; we feel what Dana feels in that moment.

I also cannot emphasize enough that a lesser show would have had Ilana’s assaulter as part of the storyline. He’s barely mentioned, and certainly doesn’t appear, or dramatically storm into the ED. That’s not what this is about, at all.

Even better, the storyline demystifies the very scary seeming process of what happens when you go to the hospital after a sexual assault, step by step. It certainly doesn’t make the situation better, necessarily. But the idea of going to report the crime, as explored here, can be terrifying enough to make one back off. The Pitt showing how the nurses and doctors are there for you, and laying out the steps plainly and simply can potentially help current or future sexual assault victims, merely by giving the story enough space in the episode to walk through it. Particularly given the usual breakneck pace of The Pitt, taking the necessary time to present this is a powerful expression that could — and likely will — have real world impact.
