Get out of here, Obama! It’s George Washington’s turn in the spotlight, as artist Phil Jimenez is returning to his classic “Spider-Man Meets The President” cover from 2009’s Amazing Spider-Man #583 to sub in GW on a variant homage for Marvel’s upcoming 1776 #1.
The new five-issue limited series is written by J. Michael Straczynski with art by Ron Lim and Sean Damien Hill, sends Captain America and a band of other superheroes back in time to save the Founding Fathers. That includes Mr. Dollar Bills Y’All himself, as well as Benjamin Franklin and John Adams — all teaming up during the American Revolution to stop history from unraveling.
“One of the (many) things that I like about the Marvel Universe is that it takes place in the real world, our world,” Straczynski said via press release. “It’s New York, or Chicago, not some imaginary location. This also applies to our history, and the opportunity to view the events of 1776 through the lens of our characters, and to better understand the meaning of those events, and the sacrifices involved, was way too good to pass up. At a time when so much of American discourse has become factionalized, it is a good time to look back and see where this began, and what it still means today.”
As part of Marvel’s celebration of the 250th, and likely final, anniversary of America, the issue will also come with the aforementioned Jimenez variant, as well as covers by Pete Woods, JoeQuesada, Paulo Siqueira, and Steve Rude.
