In advance of the premiere of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3, Paramount+ has announced the series will end with a shorter-than-usual fifth season.
“From the very beginning, STRANGE NEW WORLDS set out to honor what STAR TREK has always stood for — boundless curiosity, hope and the belief that a better future is possible,” said executive producers Akiva Goldsman, Henry Alonso Myers and Alex Kurtzman, presumably as some sort of Borg collective, via a press release provided to Comic Book Club. “We’re deeply grateful to Paramount+ for the chance to complete our five-season mission, just as we envisioned it, alongside our extraordinary cast and crew. And to the passionate fans who’ve boldly joined us on this journey — THANK YOU. With three more spectacular seasons ahead for you to see and enjoy, this adventure is far from over.”
So to be clear, Season 3 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds premieres on July 17 on Paramount+ and runs through September 11. The show has also been renewed for a fourth season, which is currently in production. And then it will come back for a fifth and final season, which will run six episodes — versus the usual 10. While premiere dates haven’t been announced for seasons four and five, it’s fair to speculate that they’ll come out in 2026 and 2027, respectively; though that’s TBA.
This also leaves the future of Star Trek in a weird place. The modern era kicked off in 2017 with Star Trek: Discovery, back when the streaming service was called CBS All Access. And over various series, miniseries, and a much maligned movie, has vastly expanded the house that Gene Roddenberry built. Now with the end of Discovery and animated series Lower Decks — which both ran five seasons as well — and no further seasons of Star Trek: Picard planned, there’s not a lot of Star Trek past Strange New Worlds. You’ve got the animated Prodigy, which seems like it’s mostly done on Netflix. And there is Starfleet Academy, which boasts an all-star cast and is set in the same part of the timeline as Discovery.
But this is a far cry from those heady days when Paramount was announcing series after series, to the point that it seemed like we’d get a new Star Trek episode every week of the year. Now? Who knows? The powers that be have discussed having other series in development. And there are the oft-threatened theatrical movies that have been in the works for years as well. But for the first time in a long time, the future of Star Trek is uncertain.
Strange New Worlds is produced by CBS Studios, Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment and the upcoming third season stars Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn, Ethan Peck, Jess Bush, Christina Chong, Celia Rose Gooding, Melissa Navia, Babs Olusanmokun and Martin Quinn, along with guest star Carol Kane and special guest star Paul Wesley. Also Melanie Scrofano, don’t forget about her.
