This summer, if you’re a fan of science fiction or horror, your choice is clear: be a Melanie Scrofano fan, or skip watching TV entirely. That’s because the one-time Wynonna Earp is branching out with not one, but two different shows that showcase her unique comedic/action abilities: SYFY’s Revival and Paramount+’s Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3.
The first premieres tonight, returning Scrofano to SYFY for a new series based on the Image Comics book of the same name by Tim Seeley and Mike Norton. In a role tailor-made for Scrofano, she plays Dana Cypress, a police detective in a small town that finds the newly dead residents coming back to life overnight, but things are decidedly not back to normal. Scrofano’s Dana is right from the comic, and right in the actress’s wheelhouse… She’s a bit of a wreck, she’s got a wry sense of humor, and she is passionately faithful to her friends and family, ready to lay down her own life to save them.
When we talked to co-showrunner Aaron Koontz about casting Scrofano in the role, it was abundantly clear she was the right choice from the get-go. “It all started with Dana, that was the domino that had to fall,” Konntz recalled. “[Co-showrunner] Luke [Boyce] and I were talking… Put some freckles on [Scrofano], and that’s Dana… Her literal personality as a human is Dana.”

It is also a homecoming for Scrofano, given Wynonna Earp ran for four seasons on SYFY before heading to Tubi for a revival (no pun intended) movie reuniting the cast of the series. Like on the earlier show, Scrofano is the perfect grounding presence for any outlandish situation, making sure you can relate to someone on-screen even when the supernatural situations are spiraling in insanity.
The same grounding element applies to Scrofano’s role on Strange New Worlds, which returns to Paramount+ next month on Thursday, July 17, for Season 3 (petition to rename the day of the week as Scrofano Thursdays). Reprising her role from Season 2, Scrofano plays Captain Marie Batel, a Starfleet commander who has an ongoing romantic relationship with Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount).
Batel was in bad shape in the Season 2 cliffhanger, having been infected with alien Gorn eggs. But she’ll be back for multiple crucial episodes in Season 3, and without spoiling anything, continues to provide the domestic drama counterpoint to the raucous adventure of the Star Trek universe. The show smartly sets Batel and Pike up as equals… Batel has a life and career of her own, Pike understands that, and based on their relationship seems — potentially — more willing to ditch it all for her, than she for him.

Here, too, she plays it calm in the midst of over-the-top circumstances, less Captain Kirk than an actual Captain, knowing her duty and willing to help the crewmates of the Enterprise out in a pinch. Unlike the Revival role, it’s less quips and kicks than a steady hand, a commensurate leader, and one who has the sort of chemistry with Pike that is rare for TV: an adult relationship built on mutual respect.
Whichever Melanie Scrofano you choose, Revival or Strange New Worlds… Well, you don’t have to choose! You can watch Revival, you can watch Strange New Worlds. Heck, you can rewatch Wynonna Earp. She’s a true TV star and the sci-fi queen we need right now. All hail the Summer of Scrofano.
