Trinity: Daughter of Wonder Woman #1 Review: 3 Fast 3 Trinity

Trinity: Daughter Of Wonder Woman #1 cover

Tom King and Belén Ortega’s backup stories featuring Trinity, the daughter of Wonder Woman, that have been running off and on in the back of the ongoing Wonder Woman title have been an utter delight. And while the new — appropriately named — Trinity: Daughter of Wonder Woman #1 keeps the creative team intact and that screwball humor going, it also makes sure that for those who are all-ages/comedy averse (not me!) have that extra ingredient that makes comics must-read: it’s important to DC Comics continuity.

I won’t spoil why or how other than it’s a smart way of getting picky readers to, er, pick up a book like this. But if you aren’t the sort of person who reads comics like they’re the newspaper, the better news is that this first issue is packed with jokes, fun, and so many adorable corgis.

The main attraction is Trinity, who has been seen at three different ages in the Wonder Woman backups. And the conceit of this comic is that those three differently aged Trinities have to come together to stop an accidental time crisis they, themselves have caused.

Along the way, King doubles down on the loose, wild humor he threw in those backups with running bits like the younger Trinity calling harbinger of doom Pariah “Piranha” and the oldest Trinity restraining from killing the teenage Trinity because it would kill herself. And Ortega shows off her comedy chops as well, ranging from the delightfully cherub-faced younger Trinity to the precious pups littered throughout the pages. Ortega even draws a pretty hilarious Ultraman, which is hard to do with the evil Superman from another universe.

The panels are looser, too. King has always been enamored by the nine-panel grid, but that rigidity is put by the wayside to let Ortega do her thing. It leads to more traditional comic book storytelling and less of The Tom King Experience, but its breezy and fun so who cares?

And then there’s the “important” aspect, which is just getting started here but points to a not-so-sneaky emotional hook that will likely pull at the heartstrings in a few issues’ time.

Overall, whether you’ve read those backup stories or not, if you like good comics, if you like fun comics, and you like the endless creativity of the DC Universe? Then Trinity: Daughter of Wonder Woman #1 is the book for you.
