‘The Walking Dead: Dead City’ Introduces A Hot New Ship: Maggie And A Grizzly Bear

This week’s episode of The Walking Dead: Dead City finally paid off on a bizarre cliffhanger from a few episodes back… The loud roar heard from Central Park. Was it a super-zombie? A very loud bird? Nope, and spoilers past this point, it turns out to be a half-dead (and not the walker kind) grizzly bear, which fights Maggie Greene (Lauren Cohan). And the main follow-up question is: folks, are we shipping it, or what?

Titled “Bridge Partners Are Hard to Come by These Days,” Maggie and company have been corralled by Bruegel (Kim Coates), who takes them to a section of his home base in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which is in Central Park. Side-note from a New Yorker, this is not accurate. The Met is across the street from Central Park, but there is no annex in the park or anything. But it does allow the wandering Grizzly Bear — likely a refugee from the Central Park Zoo, which is in Central Park — to enter the museum later, so that’s why that’s the way it is on the show.

Anyway, Maggie is busy rescuing Hershel (Logan Kim) as she is wont to do these days, when out of nowhere comes the bear in the middle of the museum. It’s bloody, scratched up, and absolutely wrecks a group of armored walkers that Maggie releases to try and stop it. Clearly, the bear has the upper hand, and Maggie knows it. So she does what she did with Glenn (Steven Yeun) so many years ago and tries to calm the bear with her feminine charms. It actually even seems to work, and the bear seems enamored of Maggie. But it’s a trick, and Maggie pulls a weapon off the wall… Only to be saved by Hershel, who has finally figured out how to throw knives correctly (he’s been practicing all season).

Blinded and flailing, Maggie tricks the bear again, this time into impaling itself on the barbed fence of Breugel’s fighting arena, and the bear dies. RIP, bear. And more importantly, RIP Maggie and the Bear, the greatest new ship on TV.

This is especially disappointing because according to the Central Park Zoo website, three grizzly bears live in the Zoo: Treena, Luna, and Amber. Three female bears. So not only is Maggie and the Bear the hot new ship, but it’s also an LGBTQ+ ship. Uh, can you say happy Pride???

Look, I hear what your main objection is, that the bear and Maggie seem too antagonistic to make it work. But if you ship Maggie and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), why not Maggie and a bear? It’s just as likely that Maggie would date a half-dead bear that wants to eat her as the man who bashed her husband’s head in. So let’s get it trending, folks… Bring back #Bearggie. The people demand it.
