BOOM! Studios Digital Titles Pulled From Some Libraries:
If you’ve been reading BOOM! Studios titles digitally through your library? Good luck.
Per The Beat, due to BOOM!’s purchase by Penguin Random House, libraries that use the Comics Plus program, which allows unlimited reading of digital comic books that participate in the program, BOOM! titles will no longer be available starting on May 30.
Other publishers like Image, Dark Horse, Oni Press and more will remain, as they are not distributed through PRH.
As a related note, recent BOOM! Studios titles also seem to only be posting sporadically on digital platforms for purchase, specifically Apple’s iBooks and Google Play. While all BOOM! titles seem to still be available on Amazon, for example only Hello Darkness issues #1-#8 are available on Google Play and iBooks, while the more recently released issues #9 and #10 are not. We’ve reached out to BOOM! for comment, but did not hear back as of recording time.
Thor Gets New Status Quo:
As the prophecy foretold, the death of Thor in Marvel’s Immortal Thor #25 will lead to — what else — a new Thor #1. But the publisher promises this “sets up a captivating new status quo for the God of Thunder unlike any in his 60+ year history.” Given Thor has been dead, alive, a god, a human, a woman, and one time a horse alien… We’ll believe it when we see it?
The synopsis for the issue teases that “The Norse Myths tell of Gods who walked the Earth, doing great deeds for the mortals who believed in them. But Asgard isn’t real, and never was. The Gods never soared in our skies, never stood with our heroes, never fought for kindness or justice. It was all just a story. Nobody’s coming to help us. But somewhere in the city… a man is waking up. A man with a hammer.”
Given that text, it’s fair to think that we’re back to the Donald Blake/Thor in one body deal. But it would be hard to say that would be unlike anything in the 60+ year run, because that would, in fact, be very like something else in the 60+ year run.
Anyway, we’ll know more when Thor #1 hits stores on August 27.
DC GO! Announces Six New Titles:
DC Comics is continuing to expand its vertical scrolling platform with the announcement of six new titles, and the renewal of two others.
Harley Quinn in Paradise, about Harley on a dating show gone horribly wrong, and Nothing Butt Nightwing, about Dick undercover at a fashion show, have both been renewed for second seasons. The third original from the first wave of DC GO!, Renaissance of Raven, was a complete story in one season, so is not part of the list of renewals.
The six new titles include: Warriors and a Wee Wonder, about the Amazons raising a baby Wonder Woman; Aquaman: Yo-Ho-Hold Onto Your Hook!, a One Piece-style pirate fantasy; Jon Kent: This Internship Is My Kryptonite, as Jon gets a job at the Daily Planet working for his mom, Lois Lane; Taste of Justice, about the Justice League’s favorite dishes; My Little Warlord, which finds a USAF pilot trapped on a dinosaur-filled island; and The Magical Mysteries of Shazam!, which seems like a pretty straightforward Shazam! story.
The new series will hit the DC Universe Infinite digital platform starting in July.
For Comic Book Club News, I’m Alex Zalben. What if Thor was a guy with a magic hammer this time, that would be — no, they’ve done that one, too.
