Denis Kitchen is well known as a publisher and comic book creator. But did you know he’s also an obsessive collector? And in this exclusive clip from Oddly Compelling, the new documentary now on Kickstarter about Kitchen, he shows off his shockingly racist, misogynist, and downright weird collection of cards that really were released in the real world (and to be clear, Kitchen does not support the messages inherent in the cards).
The clip shows Kitchen explaining some of the 100,000 cards he has in his collection, as well as the way he organizes them by topic. And it is pretty wild, something even Kitchen seems aware of. Throughout the two-minute-plus clip, Kitchen’s mind seems to boggle at the idea that these often bizarre, and often horrifying postcards were the sort of thing you could send through the mail to other people. And yet, they were!
As for the rest of the movie, Oddly Compelling will track Kitchen’s entire history from his start in indie comics to founding the CBLDF (Comic Book Legal Defense Fund), and beyond. You’ll also get a look at Kitchen’s other wild collections, and if you can believe it, the postcards aren’t even the strangest.
The Kickstarter for Oddly Compelling is now live. Watch the exclusive clip below, and for more with Kitchen on the doc, you can listen to our interview with him on the Comic Book Club podcast.
