In the latest episode of The Walking Dead: Dead City, and spoilers past this point, we get a look at what happened to Hershel (Logan Kim) before he was rescued by Maggie (Lauren Cohan) in Season 1. And as it turns out, he was living in an elevator, which seems pretty nice.
Titled “Why Did The Mainlanders Cross The River?” Season 2 Episode 3 zooms back in time to show just how villain The Dama (Lisa Emery) broke Hershel. Turns out it was a classic Stockholm Syndrome/love-bombing situation, where she plied him with walnut brittle and offered herself up as the only person who believed in him and can help him. This culminates in The Dama revealing a room she had made up for him. It’s filled with art, sculpture, and materials to create his own art.
But the pièce de résistance is that the room is a freight elevator. The Dama’s point is that there is the possibility for “reinvention,” something Hershel is looking for, but so is The Dama for the city of New York. And on top of that, the elevator has a window that looks directly on Central Park, so that Hershel can look out and reimagine what the city can be.
So, a couple of things about this: I don’t know where this is, or what this is supposed to be? The Dama is based in the King Francis Theater, a fictional location in the Walking Dead universe. Given a quick shot of the elevator from the outside, it seems like this is where Hershel is being held, and where his new elevator bedroom is based. But the building itself is missing most of the upper floors, and you can see the elevator from the outside. Is the building missing a façade? Or is this some sort of open air elevator that was attached to a theater that is supposed to be in midtown New York City?
Furthermore, where is this building that it has an unobstructed view of Central Park? I know I’m getting New York wonky here, but it would likely given the view need to be on the south side of the Park, likely in the theater district, which means it’s around Times Square. That tracks, but it’s a pretty crowded place, with a ton of tall buildings. Maybe the rest of the buildings collapsed in between it and Central Park? The view seems to imply not, and this is just a regular ol’ theater set in the middle of the street so it can look right down an Avenue. You know, a normal thing that happens.
Anyway, that’s not the point. The point here is that Hershel’s got a pretty sweet setup! Most rooms stay on one floor. Not Hershel’s room! His room can go up AND down! That’s pretty cool, and you can start to see why he went totally insane and loves The Dama instead of his mama (that would be Lauren Cohan’s Maggie). In fact, if I could sleep in an elevator, particularly one with a window (?) I would too. And with a building crumbling on the outside, why would you not trust that a lady with a background in theater to make sure your loose elevator bedroom was safe? That seems like a no-brainer to me, nothing about this situation is absolute nonsense.
Anyway, clearly Hershel did survive his death-trap room, and in the “present” he’s all glassy-eyed explaining to Maggie why the city will become something new. So, that’s something he’ll need to deal with as the season continues. Perhaps he can ponder the implications while sleeping on an escalator, or a moving walkway or some-such thing.
