Somewhere, in an alternate universe, Princess Bubblegum and Marceline didn’t just get together in the series finale of Adventure Time… They went to college together. And that’s exactly what will happen in Adventure Time: The Bubbline College Special #1, an oversized, 56-page special by Caroline Cash from Oni Press.
“I’ve been a fan of the show since it came out,” said Cash via a press release provided to Comic Book Club. “I remember watching it when it premiered on Cartoon Network. I think I was 14 years old? It completely shaped my comics making career as well, the first comics I read (outside of manga and newspaper comics) were by people who worked on Adventure Time. Since the show ended, I didn’t think I would ever have a chance to work on anything Adventure Time related, so this has been a bit of a dream come true.
“I was in the tumblr trenches fighting for my life at 15 when the What Was Missing episode dropped and was a part of the Bubbline speculation in real time. I remember when Marceline’s voice actor said they were ex girlfriends… I watched the Stakes series in college with my friends who also grew up with the show… again it is crazy to me that I have been given the opportunity to add to the canon of them being in love in every universe… favorite couple forever… an OTP dare I say…”
In the new comic, Prismo takes a look at an alternate universe where Princess Bubblegum has just started at Ooo University (OU?) and between her busy schedule she becomes friends with Marceline — who she might also be falling in love with.
“For years, Princess Bubblegum and Marceline have been the Couple of All Time (yes, capitalization required),” said Adventure Time Editor Megan Brown. “We’re so incredibly excited to explore a fun, alternate universe romp with these—dare I say—utterly iconic sapphic soulmates, created by the deft and talented hand of writer/artist Caroline Cash. This comic is unapologetically queer, and we are very excited to get to answer the age old question: what would Bubblegum and Marceline be like in college…?”
