Jackson “Butch” Guice Dead At Age 63:
Jackson “Butch” Guice, an Inkpot Award winning comic book artist best known for his work on Captain America, Micronauts, The Flash, Action Comics and more, has died at age 63.
Most recently, Guice’s work was seen in Resurrection Man: Quantum Karma from DC Comics, a revival and reinvention of the cult comic book character he co-created Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning. He was also well known as one of the architects of the classic “Death of Superman” and ”Reign of the Superman” storylines.
Guice got his start in the ’80s in fanzines, before breaking out with his Marvel work on Rom and Micronauts. From there he moved to the X-Men line, simultaneously pencilling X-Factor and New Mutants, before hopping over to DC Comics later in the decade, including Teen Titans and The Flash. Guice would jump back and forth from publishers, though, heading back to Marvel to work on Doctor Strange and Nick Fury: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Other highlights include pencilling DC/Marvel: All Access, the kick-off to the Amalgam event that brought the two universes together, as well as a long run on Birds of Prey.
In the ’90s, he became a staple at CrossGen on titles like Ruse, before leaving to join Geoff Johns in crafting Olympus for Humanoids. Since then, he’s hopped between publishers for various works, including the recent The Death of Superman 30th Anniversary Special for DC, and issues of Immortal Hulk and Invaders for Marvel.
Guice is survived by his wife, Julie, and daughter, Elizabeth Diane.
Marvel Team-Up Gets An Omnibus:
Marvel Team-Up, the classic stories teaming Spider-Man with an array of other heroes, is getting an omnibus.
Per ICv2, the 840-page hardcover will feature classic tales written by Gerry Conway & Len Wein with Roy Thomas & Steve Gerber, with art by Ross Andru, Gil Kane & Jim Mooney with Don Heck & Sal Buscema.
The volume will include the first thirty issues of Marvel Team-Up, as well as issues of Daredevil, Giant-Size Super-Heroes, and Giant-Size Spider-Man. It will hit stores on December 10, and cost $100. This will follow the publication of a Marvel Two-In-One omnibus in June, which collects the series that teamed up The Thing with Marvel heroes, and is a totally different series.
Nimona Gets A 10th Anniversary Edition:
Has it really been 10 years since ND Stevenson’s Nimona hit stores? Sure has according to HarperCollins, who has announced a 10th anniversary edition of the graphic novel.
Also per ICv2, the new deluxe paperback will have a “new cover, French flaps, sprayed edges, gold foil, and 16 pages of exclusive content, including behind-the-scenes sketches and a new foreword by Stevenson.”
Nimona is the tale of a shapeshifter teaming up with a supervillain to bring down the heroes in their sci-fi/medieval land. It’s an absolute delight, and very different from the also excellent Netflix movie based on the book. Nimona previously won an Eisner Award, and was nominated for a National Book Award.
The new edition will hit stores on May 20, 2025.
For Comic Book Club News, I’m Alex Zalben. And if Spider-Man teamed up with The Thing would they have to title that Marvel Team-Up-In-One?
