This is Comic Book Club News for April 18, 2025.
Superman Day News Roundup:
On April 18, 1938, Action Comics #1 hit stands, and the world was never the same. And to celebrate the introduction of Superman to the world, DC Comics is once again launching Superman Day, up, up and away in participating comic book stores.
The basics are that in bookstores, and on online retailers, you can get new editions of All-Star Superman, Superman Unchained, Superman for all Seasons, a facsimile edition of Action Comics #1, and an excerpt of Jimmy Olsen’s Supercyclopedia.
But wait, that’s not all! This is also the official kick-off to DC’s “Summer of Superman,” which is built around the new Superman movie in theaters, as well as a revamped Superman line of comics. In the lead-up to today’s events, DC has been dropping a slew of fun announcements.
First up, DC announced Superman Treasury 2025: Hero for All, an oversized comic book measuring 10 1/8” x 13 5/16”, essentially double the size, by Dan Jurgens with art by Bruno Redondo. This marks the first time DC has used this format in 25 years, which was previously reserved for events like Superman vs. Muhammad Ali, or Superman vs. The Fantastic Four. That will hit stores on July 2.
Next up? Corner boxes are back, baby! The classic cover treatment will return starting in May, with new designs featuring Superman, Supergirl, Krypto, and Superboy, all by Dan Mora. Per the iconic image of Superman, Supergirl and Superboy will be breaking chains, Krypto will be breaking a metal leash, and Superman will be breaking chains made of Kryptonite and, per PR from DC, “futuristic dark energy,” which I don’t think is a material but whatever.
And if that wasn’t enough, DC is also releasing “Superman Movie” variant covers throughout the next few months. But the neat twist is that they aren’t photo covers — they’re iconic DC comic book artists with their take on David Corenswet as the Man of Steel. Those artists include Nicola Scott, Jim Lee, Dan Jurgens, Dan Mora, Jerry Ordway, Jorge Jiménez, Kevin Maguire, and Frank Quitely, and will begin with Supergirl #1 on May 14.
