‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Ending Explained: What That Mid-Credits Scene Means For Season 2

I’m afraid I have some bad news: as of tonight’s episode of Daredevil: Born Again, the Man Without Fear is off the air, at least until Season 2. Or less confusingly, Disney+ aired the Daredevil: Born Again Season 1 finale, full of shocking twists, some gruesome deaths, and an ending reminiscent of The Empire Strikes Back.

With so much left hanging, you might need a little bit of the ol’ Daredevil: Born Again ending explained. Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered here, as well as whether there’s an end credits scene, and when you might expect Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 to premiere.

Before we get to all that, though, here’s a recap of everything that went down on the season finale.

Daredevil: Born Again Season Finale Recap:

We pick up — briefly — right where we left off last week, with Benjamin “Dex” Poindexter, aka Bullseye (Wilson Bethel) shooting at Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio), but finding that Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) jumped in front of the bullet. So, how did we get here?

One year ago, Vanessa Fisk (Ayelet Zurer) visited Dex in prison and explained that former FBI agent Ray Nadeem’s (Jay Ali) scheme to send Wilson to prison from Daredevil Season 3 fell apart — so Dex is being released to an insane asylum. Instead, she’ll get him out if he kills two people Benjamin Cafaro, aka Dumb Benny, and Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson). So is Kingpin behind this? “He’s always part of this,” notes Vanessa.

That explains that, but back in the present Matt, is not only alive and in the hospital, and Heather (Margarita Levieva) is there with him… But then Matt says “Karen?” instead which is a little oopsie to do with your girlfriend.

Once Matt is back on his feet, both he and Wilson start putting it all together. Red Hook is essentially international waters, and now the Fisks — together — own it. Wilson wants to shut down the city, and as we slowly discover, turn Red Hook into his own little empire. I guess he’s into the meatballs at IKEA? Anyway, what follows is Sheila Rivera (Zabryna Guevara), the one good person in the Mayor’s Office, making a deal with Police commish Gallo (Michael Gaston) to shut it all down. That’ll work out fine, right?

Unfortunately for them, Kingpin gives New York a little kick in the direction he wants it to go in by cutting the power off to the city. In the chaos, Buck (Arty Froushan) tries to kill Matt in the hospital… But he’s already escaped. And by the time Matt gets home, he’s got a visitor in the dark: Frank Castle, aka The Punisher (Jon Bernthal), with a snazzy new haircut and looking much more ready to go than the last time we saw him. Why is Frank there? Well, he got a call from a friend who is not Matt’s girlfriend, to get him out alive.

That might be tough, as the Anti-Vigilante Task Force arrives, dressed like a bunch of Punishers, and tries to kill them both. Daredevil tries to take ’em alive, but Punisher doesn’t, and in the process, they discover that Cole North (Jeremy Isaiah Earl) was the man who killed Hector Ayala (Kamar de Los Reyes) a few episodes back. Doesn’t matter much, though, as a grenade blows up Matt’s apartment with Frank and Matt just making it out, Lethal Weapon style.

Who is waiting for them? Why, it’s not-a-girlfriend Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll). After a brief confab, Karen and Matt pull up to investigate Foggy’s old files, where they discover what the Dumb Benny case was about: Fisk is (as mentioned above) building his own city-state, based on Red Hook being a “free port” since 1855. Meanwhile, Frank hears that the AVTF is going after the duo, and takes the fight to them, killing an entire battalion before they take him down.

So now, we’re set up for the endgame.

First to fall? Gallo, who is betrayed by a terrified Sheila. He gets taken to Red Hook where, in front of everyone, Kingpin rips the top of his head and jaw off in the most horrifying fashion possible. Meanwhile, a defiant Frank refuses to join up with the Fauxnishers who idolize him, and gets the crap kicked out of him.

Karen and Matt are ready to storm the castle… But Karen talks him down: he can’t talk down an entire army on his own, so they’ll need an army, too.

As the power comes back on, Fisk talks to his former couple’s therapist Heather and explains he wants her to be the new commissioner of mental health for the city. And Fisk, triumphant, addresses New York and announces the Safer Streets Initiative: no vigilantes, a curfew at 8pm, and New York City is under martial law. “Never forget,” Wilson says in closing. “I love New York.”

Back with our defeated heroes, Matt gets a quick pep talk from Karen, and they head to Josie’s where all the remaining good guys have gathered. And back in Red Hook, Kingpin has filled his cages with everyone else. That includes Punisher, and Swordsman (Tony Dalton). While Vanessa and Wilson sit down to a victory dinner, Matt pumps up the troops.

“This is our city,” Matt says. “Not his. And we can take it back. Together. The weak. The strong. All of us. Resist. Rebel. Rebuild. Because we are the city. Without fear.”

So yeah, in terms of explaining the ending… New York is under martial law, with the Fisks running their own city-state and army (the AVTF) out of Red Hook. Meanwhile, Daredevil is trying to rally whoever he can out of Josie’s, and they are very much outmatched. There is one wild card, though…

Does Daredevil: Born Again Have An End Credits Scene? That Mid-Credits Scene, Explained:

Jon Bernthal as The Punisher

So there is one scene mid-credits and another something after the end credits. The mid-credits scene picks up in that basement full of cages, with Frank Castle putting on his most charming voice to have a guard come over. “How’s it going,” Frank says. “What do they call you?” The guard says Anthony Petruccio, Frank cheerfully points out he’s from New Jersey… And then grabs his arm, breaks it, and escapes.

While this could lead directly to the Punisher one-shot special Bernthal is working on, it seems more likely that he could free the rest of the prisoners and help provide more of a resistance against the Kingpin than Daredevil can muster on his own. How much that means Frank will show up in Season 2 is very much TBA, if at all. But we’ll see!

Meanwhile, there is one end credits thing, which is not a scene, but we do get a classic “DAREDEVIL Will Return In Season 2” which spoils the next question we’re gonna answer.

When Will Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 Premiere On Disney+?

First of all, yep, there is a Daredevil: Born Again Season 2: it actually went into production at the end of February, right before Season 1 premiered. At the current time, it’s expected to be eight episodes long. But when, after that harrowing cliffhanger, will it premiere?

The short answer is “we don’t know” but the also short answer is likely in 2026. However, we can try to get a little more precise than that. Season 1 had an atypical shooting schedule due to the SAG-AFTRA/WGA strikes, as well as the pause to revamp and reshoot significant portions of the show. However, assuming everything goes smoothly this time, production should wrap up in July. Four to five months is pretty typical for a production like this, with post-production varying wildly, but since Daredevil is less effects-heavy than other MCU productions (unless Matt gets laser powers next season), expect it to be anywhere from five months to eight months.

Given all that, I’d say there’s a pretty good chance Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 will premiere in early 2026, and possibly even the beginning of March, to keep it on a yearly schedule. That certainly depends on a lot of factors, including the state of the MCU, Disney+, what other shows are premiering then, and if there is another work stoppage. But as of this writing I do think predicting a late February, early March 2026 premiere date for Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 is a safe bet.
