Ever since her introduction, fans of Daredevil: Born Again have been wondering what BB Urich (Genneya Walton) is up to. Sure she’s got The BB Report, the most important news program in New York City (other than NY1, of course). But why has she been getting so close to Daniel Blake (Michael Gandolfini)? And why has she been so eager to get closer to Mayor Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) as well? Well, as of this week’s episode, we finally know the answer, and BB’s true agenda is a thrilling twist for fans of the original Daredevil series.
Spoilers past this point, but BB Urich is looking to get justice for the murder of her uncle, Ben Urich (Vondie Curtis-Hall). In case you’ve forgotten — it’s been over 10 years at this point, after all — Ben was an investigative journalist in the first season of Daredevil on Netflix. While looking into Wilson Fisk with Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll), he got close to exposing the truth about the Kingpin… Only for Wilson to confront him, alone, in his apartment and strangle Urich to death for his role in investigating Fisk’s mother.
The murder was never pinned on Fisk, officially, and despite being sent to jail twice the Kingpin hasn’t been accused publicly of the crime. But that’s all about to change. In this week’s Daredevil: Born Again, while at a Black and White ball, BB takes a quick break to confront Commissioner Gallo (Michael Gaston). During the conversation, she explains that she knows Fisk was the main suspect in Ben Urich’s murder, and strongly intimates that’s why she’s getting so close to Blake and Fisk. And furthermore, she explains that not everything she publishes is under her own name… Again, strongly implying that if evidence arises that can pin the murder of Ben Urich on Wilson Fisk, she has ways of getting it out there without damaging her relationships inside City Hall.
Gallo, already on the outs thanks to Fisk’s anti-vigilante task force — just before the scene with Urich, Gallo sees one of his former police officers deep fry a guy’s hand with impunity — is clearly going to start working with BB to help take down Fisk, and expose Ben Urich’s murderer for who he is.
Obviously, we’ll have to see how this all turns out, but for those of us who thought Ben Urich’s murder in Daredevil Season 1 was a giant misstep for an otherwise excellent season of TV, this is thrilling to see justice (potentially) finally coming. It won’t bring Ben Urich back, but it is the next best thing. Now all BB Urich has to do is survive the Season 1 finale. Otherwise, here’s hoping there are even more Urichs out there with journalism in their blood.
