One of the biggest questions surrounding Daredevil: Born Again is why Bullseye (Wilson Bethel) killed Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson) in the opening minutes of the series premiere. The event traumatized viewers and slightly more importantly led to a change of status quo for Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) that has had repercussions for every episode since then. And now, thanks to this week’s episode we know why Foggy was killed… And it wasn’t for the reasons you might think.

Spoilers past this point. To get right to it: Vanessa Fisk (Ayelet Zurer) hired Benjamin “Dex” Poindexter, aka Bullseye, to kill Foggy Nelson. Why did she do it, and how? Well, there are some details still missing, but here’s what we know. If you’ll recall back in the opening episode, “Heaven’s Half Hour,” Foggy was about to finish a case involving a client they nicknamed “Dumb Benny.” Foggy had stashed Benny at his apartment, which was attacked by Bullseye, who wanted to know where Foggy was. That led to Bullseye shooting Foggy, and seemingly trying to kill Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll) before Daredevil stopped him.

There are a couple more details that were dropped during a convo at Josie’s between Foggy and Kirsten McDuffie (Nikki M. James) that you may not have picked up on earlier. Specifically, why Benny was arrested in the first place: for ripping off a “bonded warehouse” and seemingly stealing 20 cases of Lafite Rothschild, a very chic wine that he found there. But more importantly, the conversation established the warehouse was in Red Hook. Who else has criminal dealings in Red Hook? Vanessa Fisk, and Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio), something they discuss this very week. We also know that Red Hook, at least according to the series, is exempt from taxes and tolls.

The point is that whatever Dumb Benny discovered in Red Hook seems to have been tied in some way to Vanessa’s overall plan for the area. And it’s likely that Foggy discovered that plan, via Benny… So Vanessa hired Bullseye to kill Benny and Foggy.

Again, we don’t know all the specifics yet — that’s for next week’s season finale. But for now, we the viewers know that Vanessa was behind Foggy’s murder. And moreover, Matt Murdock knows, too.

“I know it was you,” Matt tells Vanessa while dancing at the Black and White ball. “I know you had Foggy killed.”

Whether Matt will have time to find out more about this plot or take action on it, is TBD. Particularly since he was shot while taking a bullet from Bullseye meant to kill Mayor Fisk. But just know that justice for Foggy seems to be coming. And Dumb Benny too, of course.
