Is Matt Murdock Going To Die On ‘Daredevil: Born Again’???

In the closing minutes of this week’s penultimate episode of Daredevil: Born Again Season 1, we get a shocking, unexpected moment, and spoilers past this point. The cliffhanger of the episode? Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) jumps in front of Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) as Benjamin “Dex” Poindexter (Wilson Bethel) shoots to kill the Mayor. And as the hour ends, Matt Murdock is left bleeding out from the gunshot wound. So is Daredevil dead on Daredevil: Born Again? Is Charlie Cox leaving the series???

Ummm… No. Daredevil is not dead. Charlie Cox isn’t leaving the show. In fact, he’s busy right now filming Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, so he should be just fine. It’s also pretty hard, even with the “Born Again” title to have a Daredevil show without, you know. Daredevil.

So despite appearances, this is your classic second-to-last-episode cliffhanger that is meant to tease the hero’s death but won’t actually deliver. Don’t worry, folks, Cox isn’t going anywhere, he’s just joined the MCU.

That said, since I can’t publish a 165 word article that answers the headline easily in one word — that being “no” — here are some more words about how Daredevil dies in Marvel Comics.

How Does Daredevil Die In Marvel Comics?

Like most mainstream comic book characters, Daredevil has died a bunch of times in different ways, only to return to life. First up? In 1968’s Daredevil #41, the hero “killed off” his own alter ego Mike Murdock as a part of an effort by Stan Lee to simplify things (the short version is that Matt was pretending to be his own twin brother).

Also not exactly what we’re talking about here, Daredevil: End of Days was a non-canonical series by Brian Michael Bendis and David Mack, as part of Marvel’s “The End” line of books that posited how the heroes and villains of the Marvel U would meet their maker. This series kicked off with Daredevil dying in final confrontation with Bullseye, and reporter Ben Urich trying to figure out his last word — “Mapone” — in a quasi-reference to Citizen Kane.

And in a bit of bait and switch, the storyline “The Death of Daredevil” that ended Charles Soule’s run on the title didn’t really kill Daredevil either. His pulse stopped for a bit, but he was back the next issue to kick of Chip Zdarsky’s run.

Thus, it was up to Zdarsky to murder Daredevil, for real. The short version of this one is that Elektra killed Daredevil in Daredevil #12 as a way of sending him to Hell to fight the Devil and rescue his friend Foggy Nelson, who had also been sent to Hell. Yes, that’s the short and simple version. Daredevil did come back to life in the next run by Saladin Ahmed, but with a new identity as a priest and with most of the world having forgotten about him — though that didn’t last long, either.

Point being here, Daredevil does die or fakes his death in the comics a bunch. And far more importantly, I now have enough words in this article. Thanks for reading!
