Patrick Horvath’s Free For All from Oni Press, a comic about billionaires fighting billionaires, may have not sold a billion copies. But it certainly sold enough copies for the publisher to — as Comic Book Club can exclusively reveal — sell out, and head back for a second printing.
Written and drawn by Horvath before he hit the big time with Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees, the book has seen its first comic book store edition from Oni Press as a 56-page one-shot novella. Set in what I would call a Utopian future, billionaires are randomly selected to either donate half their fortune to society, or fight to the death in a gladiatorial arena to protect their wealth.
Into the billionaire thunderdome enters two billionaires who used to be married, and have to hash out their relationship while they try to murder each other. It’s smart, funny, extremely timely, and clearly is resonating with readers.
Here’s the official synopsis, per Oni Press:
In the future, the World Finance League exists to benefit all, randomly choosing those from among the billionaires and trillionaires of the world and presenting them with a choice: either donate half of their assets to the common good — or defend them in ritual combat.
Reigning champion and real estate magnate Ted Brooks has 22 victories under his belt — defending the wealth he schemed and stabbed to get — when he is forced to face his ex-wife, Luella Dominguez, in a fight to the death. Luella has been training, waiting for this moment. But will she have what it takes to defeat the man who would do anything — absolutely anything — to keep his fortune?
The Free For All second printing will hit stores on April 30. Get a look at the new cover, below. FOC (Final Order Cutoff) is April 7, and the book will cost $7.99.
