Is [SPOILER] Dead On ‘Daredevil: Born Again’?

Muse in Daredevil Born Again

Another episode of Daredevil: Born Again, another major death. And this time, it was — spoiler warning past this point — not a hero, but a villain: as of the end of Episode 7, it sure looks like Muse is dead on Daredevil: Born Again. But is he? Will Muse return for Daredevil: Born Again Season 2? And how does Muse come back in Marvel Comics?

Great questions, all, and we have some of the answers. To recap briefly, Muse was revealed on this week’s episode to be Bastian Cooper, played by Hunter Doohan — as many fans expected. In fact, Bastian revealed this to Heather Glenn (Margarita Levieva), his therapist, who he’s obsessed with. As part of this obsession he tries to drain her blood to make his twisted paint with, but Daredevil (Charlie Cox) fights him to save Heather… At which point, Heather shoots Muse several times with a gun, killing him.

By the time Mayor Fisk’s (Vincent D’Onofrio) anti-vigilante task force arrives, Daredevil is gone, Heather is nearly bleeding to death, and Muse is dead. That pretty much puts the literal nail in the coffin where Muse is concerned.

But what this article presupposes is, what if it didn’t?

How Does Muse Die In Marvel Comics? And How Does Muse Return?

muse death comics

As we’ve covered before, the Muse in Marvel Comics is very different from his on-screen counterpart. The serial killer artist is superpowered in the comics, an Inhuman with the ability to absorb sensation. Without getting too in the weeds here, after a confrontation with Daredevil’s sidekick, Blindspot, Muse lost the fight and killed himself by burning to death in a pile of flaming debris, because Blindspot outshone him.

Normally that would be the end of someone’s story, but this is comics we’re talking about. In the currently ongoing series Daredevil: Unleash Hell, it was revealed that Muse is in Hell, and able to travel to Earth as a ghost. There he inspired and ultimately possessed an art student named Morgan in order to continue making his sculptures of death.

Here’s the thing: none of that is likely to happen on Daredevil: Born Again. This Muse doesn’t have powers, there’s no Hell to speak of, and certainly no ghosts. While there are plenty of mystical occurrences in the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe), Born Again isn’t really including any of them. Even a mention of White Tiger’s (Kamar de Los Reyes) magical amulet hasn’t shown off the actual magic. So in the context of Born Again, there’s no reason to think a kid with no powers shot multiple times is coming back to life.

Except…

Here’s How Muse Could Return In Daredevil: Born Again Season 2

Despite everything I said above, there are still some reasons to think we haven’t seen the last of Muse. First, though, there’s a quote from showrunner Dario Scardapane that has been misreported a bunch of places.

“The Muse run, for lack of a better word, in this story has pretty shocking consequences. And those consequences don’t end,” Scardapane told TV Line. “We’re carrying them into Season 2, is the best way I can put it.”

While fans read that as “Muse will be in Season 2,” now that we know Muse is dead, it’s a little easier to interpret that as the fallout from Heather killing Muse will continue into the next season. That’s likely both on Heather, who seems fascinated by vigilantes and now sort of is one herself; and Mayor Fisk using Muse as the excuse he needs to amp up the anti-vigilante task force.

But I did say “except,” right? So first of all, Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson) was murdered in the first ten minutes of the series premiere. But he has already been confirmed as returning in Season 2, in some form. If Foggy is returning, whether through a dream sequence, flashback, or actual resurrection, it stands to reason other characters like Muse could return in a similar way.

There is one even more telling piece of evidence, though, and I’ll put ANOTHER spoiler warning here: as of March 11, there was a notation on a trailer for the currently filming Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 that said… “Stunt Muse”:

muse returns in daredevil born again season 2

While that’s far from confirmation, it seems likely someone is in the Muse suit doing stunts in Season 2. Is this Hunter Doohan, back alive as Bastian Cooper? Perhaps there’s a Muse copycat killer? Or maybe Heather is driven mad by her encounter with Muse, and becomes Muse herself?

Whatever is happening, it seems likely that Muse may be back in some form in Born Again Season 2. Whether that form will be riddled with bullet-holes or not? We shall see.
