After four weeks and six episodes, the Man Without Fear is back. Spoilers past this point, but as of Daredevil: Born Again Episode 6, Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) is, er, born again as Daredevil. And the way he puts on the suit again is unexpected, delightful, and absolutely perfect.
In the episode, the villain Muse is on the loose and draining people of blood for his messed up murals. What Muse doesn’t know is that Hector Ayala (Kamar de los Reyes), aka The White Tiger, was investigating the people Muse has been disappearing all over the city before he died. After his unfortunate demise, his niece Angela del Toro (Camila Rodriguez) has picked up his torch and wants to continue the investigation. She brings the case to Matt, who pretends that it’s not his business… So frustrated, she leaves to go investigate the subway tunnels under NYC herself.
Muse captures her, and with Angela missing Soledad Ayala (Ashley Marie Ortiz), her Aunt, calls Matt in a panic. He does what any sane person does, and dials 911… But when they pick up, he immediately hangs up. “F**k it,” Matt says, and the camera cuts to him in full Daredevil regalia, swinging across the city, ready to take the fight to Muse himself.

What’s so delightful about this moment is it dispenses with all the angst, the build-up, and gets to the good stuff. We’ve seen Matt deal with his heartache over the death of Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson), and his pact with the Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio) to stay out of costume. We’ve seen him talk about trying to use the law instead of his own fists, and wrestling with the demons inside him that make him dress in a devil costume and fight crime. And rather than playing out yet another conversation like this, or have him feel conflicted about being Daredevil again… Matt just does it.
Dodgy CGI model aside, seeing him just back in the costume again is exhilarating. And credit to the show for playing what could be a serious dramatic beat as a comedic one. From the punctuation of the invective to the soaring score, it’s nearly impossible not to laugh with glee when the 911 scene smash cuts to the NYC skyline.
We’re also, it should be noted, six episodes into a nine-episode season. So to spend any more time waffling would be, potentially, dragging things out far too long. It also lets us end the episode with a killer (literally) fight scene with Muse, who escapes to paint another day. And rather than being goofy for the rest of the hour, Matt instead ends the episode dramatically, saving Angela’s life.
That we swing through so many tones in a short period — successfully — is impressive in and of itself. But the real triumph here is that Daredevil is back, Muse is on the loose, and we’ve got a perfect re-origin story for NYC’s premiere vigilante.
