Someone Over At Marvel Sure Loves Starship, Huh?

Yelena in Thunderbolts and Kingpin in Daredevil Born Again

It may just be a coincidence, or it may be an overzealous music supervisor. Either way, it’s pretty clear that somebody over at Marvel Studios loves the band Starship. Because as of this week’s Daredevil: Born Again, we’ve got our second appearance of the band’s music in a Marvel project in as many months.

The first time Starship flew into the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) was for the trailer for Thunderbolts* which dropped during this year’s Super Bowl. As the sad-sack antiheroes of the team try — and generally fail — to work together, the trailer is accompanied by an augmented version of the 1987 hit “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now” off the gold album No Protection. While there isn’t any easily searchable sales data, I’m going to assume that the Super Bowl airing plus 12 million plus views online probably led to some renewed interest in the band. Let’s say they sold an extra billion albums and leave it at that. Why not?

Well, Starship, get ready for another sales bump because tonight’s episode of Born Again featured 1985’s mega-hit “We Built This City” off the album Knee Deep in the Hoopla… Not once, but twice.

In the episode, Mayor Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) is touring around New York City and is treated to the extremely off-key rendition of “We Built This City” thanks to some local school kids. While Fisk can’t wait to exit from the performance, he’s whisked to the Latvian Embassy to help celebrate Latvian Heritage Day (not Latverian Heritage Day)… Where they sing him a version of “We Built This City” in Latvian.

Is this as “cool” as the version in Thunderbolts*? Uh… No. It’s played as a joke. And it’s a pretty great one, particularly given the normally unflappable Wilson Fisk’s reaction to these events. It’s also a tune that is easily recognizable in both English and Latvian, regardless of your natural language. So that’s the whole bit.

But the fact remains that this is a surprising amount of focus on a band that hasn’t had a hit since 1987 and hasn’t released an album since 2013. The big question, of course, is what’s next for this burgeoning Marvel/Starship relationship? Will they reveal Galactus’ real name is Sara in Fantastic Four: First Steps so they can use Starship’s third monster hit, “Sara”? One can only hope.
