Who Is Muse? The ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Villain, Explained

Muse in Daredevil Born Again

After weeks of anticipation, one of the biggest villains Daredevil (Charlie Cox) has ever faced arrived on Daredevil: Born Again. Spoilers past this point, but in the opening moments of this week’s episode, we finally met Muse. But who is Muse? And who is the man behind the mask?

To take a step back, in this week’s fourth episode, we get a glimpse of the baddie right at the top of the hour. After Hector Ayala’s (Kamar de los Reyes) niece Angela Del Toro (Camila Rodriguez) picks up his effects after he was brutally murdered last week — seemingly by The Punisher (Jon Bernthal) — we cut to some abandoned subway tracks and see the masked Muse carrying a body.

Where he’s taking the body, and what he’s doing with it we don’t find out until the end of the episode. But midway through the hour, we do get a surprising reveal, that the graffiti we’ve been seeing throughout the city in the series is, indeed, by Muse. That includes the Kingpin mural glimpsed previously, as well as a White Tiger mural seen in this episode.

But what concerns us is the stinger at the end of the hour, when Muse turns up again… And he seems to be draining the blood from the man he carried into an abandoned part of the subway. So what is he up to?

Who Is Muse In Marvel Comics?

Muse in Marvel Comics

Created by writer Charles Soule and artist Ron Garney, Muse is a serial killer street artist gifted with Inhuman powers. To be clear to those not 100% familiar with the comics, that’s powers granted to him by Terrigen Mists that allow him to suck in any sensory input around him. That makes things very difficult for Daredevil, who relies on sensory input. It also helps power up Muse, who is super-fast, super-strong, and super-good at art.

He also loves making art from blood and body parts, which is why Daredevil wants to stop him. While it’s TBD whether he’s doing the same thing with blood on Born Again, in the books, his first mural is discovered to be painted with the blood of 100 people before he starts to move on to sculptures made of dead bodies.

Muse’s true identity is unknown in the comics, but after getting defeated by Daredevil’s sidekick Blindspot, Muse kills himself and is sent to hell. Later, in the currently running miniseries Daredevil: Unleash Hell, his spirit has inhabited a young art student named Morgan, using her to kill again. It’s very likely that exactly zero percent of this part of the storyline will play into the series. In fact, Muse may not have powers at all, given the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) likely wants to forget both the show Inhumans and the Inhumans storyline on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. exists.

Who Is Playing Muse In Daredevil: Born Again?

So you may notice that Muse is not credited in the end credits of this week’s episode of Daredevil: Born Again. Part of this is likely amping up the mystery aspects of the character above, and sure, it could be that Muse is played by some otherwise uncredited stuntman.

…But there’s a potential clue here that’s been heavily speculated about on the internet. I’m going to put an UNPRECEDENTED second spoiler warning here, because you may not want to know this piece of the puzzle.

As we wrote up around the second episode of the show, actor Hunter Doohan from Wednesday and other productions is playing a character named Bastian on Born Again. He’s the weird kid who asked Heather Glenn (Margarita Levieva) about seeing her as a therapist, and has thus far not been glimpsed again.

However! Hunter Doohan is credited as a guest star on this episode and in the end credits as Bastian — despite seemingly not appearing in the hour. So if you put two and two together, you get that most likely Hunter Doohan is Bastian, who is Muse. Is it possible we’re putting two and two together and getting six? Sure. But also it sure looks like Muse has a similar body shape to Doohan, and the same eyes if you look closely at his mask.

We’ll likely get confirmation (or not) about whether Doohan is playing Muse as the season continues. But for now, just know that Muse is here, and that means very, very bad things for the Man Without Fear.
