Did Eve Die In ‘Invincible’?

There are a ton of big events in the Invincible Season 3 finale. But one of the biggest — and potentially the most confusing — is exactly what happened to Atom Eve (Gillian Jacobs). Because — and spoilers past this point — for at least a few minutes it sure looks like she’s dead. But did Eve die in Invincible? Is Eve dead?

Well… No. And in fact, there’s not only an explanation of what happened to Atom Eve in the episode itself, but an entire other episode about how and why Atom Eve is the way she is. So let’s get into it.

How Did Eve Die In Invincible?

Again, to be clear… Eve did not technically die in Invincible. However, in the Season 3 finale, “I Thought You’d Never Shut Up,” Invincible (Steven Yeun) is battling Conquest (Jeffrey Dean Morgan)… And losing. Eve checks herself out of the hospital, and comes to help, even doing a magical girl armor suit-up to face down the evil Viltrumite.

It’s not enough. Conquest breaks her armor, literally knocks her jaw off, and then punches straight through her midsection. Invincible sees her falling to the ground and flies to her, catching her mid-air. And that’s when she seemingly dies, with Mark lowering her to the ground and sobbing over her still body. This is also what motivates Mark to decide to kill Conquest, dropping the ice-cold line, “I can see the future. You don’t live to see tomorrow.”

But unbeknownst to Mark, while he battles Conquest, something is going on with Eve. She begins to glow behind him, a pink atomic design surrounding her body until she goes Super Saiyan, or Avatar State, your preference.

Powered up, Eve blasts Conquest with everything she’s got, ripping his skin off. And then spent, she falls to the ground. That’s all Mark needs, though, as he proceeds to seemingly beat Conquest to death by head-butting him, given that both of his arms are broken.

With Conquest “dead,” Mark drags himself over to Eve, who is lying on the ground. The fully nude Atom Eve is A) surprised she’s fully nude and B) glad to see Mark, who can barely keep his eyes open. And there they lie, in a sort of weird Yin and Yang symbol, if one side of the symbol was a superhero caked in blood, and the other side was a stark naked Atom Eve.

So, how did Eve survive?

How Did Eve Survive In Invincible?

There’s a pretty simple textual explanation for this. After the commercial break, Mark wakes up in the GDA (Global Defense Agency) hospital, and basically tells Eve that he thought she died. So, what happened?

“It’s… Complicated,” Eve explains. “I was given powers while I was still in the womb, but they put in mental blocks to limit what I could do. That’s the only reason I can’t change sentient matter. But when something really traumatic happens, it overrides those blocks and I can use my powers without any limitations. It happened once before and I’ve been meaning to tell you, but the time was never right. Almost dying was stressful enough to allow me to rebuild my entire body.”

So yeah, Eve — note the “almost dying” — was on the brink of death but rebuilt her body. The thing to understand about Atom Eve and her powers is that she is functionally immortal… Any time she feels the stress of death coming out, her body will repair and remake itself from scratch. So while plenty of characters on Invincible can die at any time, for the most part, Eve is not one of them. Life can get tough for her, but unless she’s obliterated in an instant her powers will bring her back.

As for what she’s referring to in the speech, the first time she used her powers this way wasn’t on herself, it was on the scientist who made her in the Atom Eve Special. So there you go! No, Eve didn’t die in Invincible. And in fact, she’s never gonna die. Case closed!
