From The World Of Minor Threats: Welcome To Twilight #1 Review: Wingin’ It

From the World of Minor Threats: Welcome to Twilight #1 cover

There hasn’t been a bad title from the Dark Horse Comics Minor Threats universe yet. And great news, From the World of Minor Threats: Welcome to Twilight #1 doesn’t break that trend, thanks to an expertly crafted issue by Matt Fraction and Mike Allred.

Unlike previous miniseries, Welcome to Twilight is an anthology set in the alt-superhero world teaming all-star creators to tackle tales in the world of the books. Here we meet Benjamin “Brock” Bronkowicz, a guy with bird wings who can’t fly, yet parlayed his look into an ’80s-style procedural TV show career. And now? He’s doing the con tour circuit, with diminishing results.

Into this mix comes the classic dame he’s got to rescue, a dangerous mobster, and generally getting in well over his head. You know, the old noir tropes, except with a bird guy and a guy with a small man on his face. So: better than usual.

This, in essence, is what the world created by Patton Oswalt, Jordan Blum and many others has built up… A place where you can mix genre tropes with superhero tropes to find something fresh and new. Fraction’s humor is well on display in this book, not-so-subtly masking a meditation on getting older on the convention circuit. Meanwhile, you’ve got some classic, ginchy Mike Allred art to accompany it, with Fraction leaning into his collaborator’s usual haunts to make the book soar.

If you’re curious about Minor Threats, and are hesitant to check out any of the previous series? Well, don’t be, they’re all great. But if you want a done-in-one introduction with no prior stories necessary? Welcome to Twilight #1 will fit the bill. That’s a bird pun, by the way.

From The World Of Minor Threats: Welcome To Twilight #1 Official Synopsis:

But a chance encounter with a mysterious woman empowers Brock to fight for a life he once thought was over. Can Brock learn to fly again? Find out in the exciting first issue of a miniseries that explores the Minor Threats universe through the eyes of legendary comic creators.
