Now that we’ve all had a few days to recover — though many of us never will — from the big death of Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson), a second thought might be popping into your head… Why did Bullseye (Wilson Bethel) kill Foggy on Daredevil: Born Again?

It’s a good question, and one that looms over the events of the first season of the series. Before we get into the possibilities for why the baddie killed the avocado at law, let’s discuss some of what brought us here. In the series premiere of Born Again, “Heaven’s Half Hour,” Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox), Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll), and Foggy are back together again in a new law firm — just like they decided to do at the end of Daredevil Season 3. While several years have passed on the MCU timeline since then, it’s like no time has passed at all when it comes to this trio.

That is until Foggy gets a call from a client nicknamed “Dumb Benny.” To throw out a random theory here, I’m guessing that’s to distinguish him from the late, great Ben Urich (Vondie Curtis-Hall), but I digress. Regardless, Foggy has Dumb Benny stashed at his apartment, and calls because he’s being attacked by Benjamin “Dex” Poindexter, aka Bullseye. Matt runs away to become Daredevil, but Bullseye has already left Dumb Benny’s apartment.

Instead, he’s headed to Josie’s Bar, where he shoots Foggy through the chest. Then he heads to the street and pulls a gun on Karen, and says, “Hello, Karen.” This, by the way, is a very specific reference to Daredevil Season 3, Episode 6, where Dex dressed as Daredevil, murdered nearly the entire staff of the New York Bulletin, and walked up to Karen saying, “Hello, Karen. It’s nice to see you again.” Without getting too in the weeds here, the important takeaway is that Dex knows Karen; he’s barely interacted with Foggy.

Anyway, Daredevil swings in and smashes him through the window of Josie’s Bar. In the intervening fight, Foggy dies, and bereft, DD pushes Bullseye off the roof with the intent to kill him (though Dex survives).

That’s a lot of wind-up here for the central question: why did Bullseye kill Foggy on Daredevil: Born Again?

Bullseye Was Trying To Hurt Daredevil

Bullseye on Daredevil Born Again

This seems to be the most likely possibility, right? Daredevil Season 3 ends with Dex getting his spine broken by the Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio), and the last shot of the season is his spine getting operated on, then the camera zooms in on his eyeball, where you can see the shape of a bullseye. It’s pretty silly!

But also, opening on this picks up that thread directly from the last scene of Daredevil, to the first scene of Daredevil: Born Again. While Kingpin did the breaking, Bullseye hates Daredevil, and wants him to pay by killing Foggy and Karen. That also tracks with Bullseye’s usual motivation in the comics: make Matt Murdock suffer as much as humanly possible.

Bullseye Was Hired To Kill Nelson, Murdock, And/Or Page

There’s another possibility here which ties into another question: why now? Like I mentioned above, there have been several years between the events of Daredevil and the beginning of Born Again. It might be as simple as it took Dex time to heal from his spinal injuries. Or it could be as simple as “well Daredevil ended in 2018, and Born Again premieres in 2025.” That last bit is certainly the actual answer as to why Bullseye waited so long to attack the trio.

But it’s also possible that Bullseye wasn’t acting out of pure revenge. Kingpin swears to Matt later in the episode that he wasn’t behind Foggy’s death, which means that either he’s lying — which is entirely possible — or someone else was behind the attack. But it also, in script terms, raises the possibility that someone directed Bullseye, rather than him going rogue.

In the previous TV series, Bullseye was working directly for Kingpin, so is there another baddie out there? And if so, why would he/she hire Bullseye to take out our heroes? And specifically Foggy and Karen at that?

Bullseye Didn’t Kill Foggy At All… They Faked His Death

Look, it is a stretch to include Bullseye in these plans at all. But in the classic storyline “The Devil In Cell Block D” by Ed Brubaker and Michael Lark, Foggy is stabbed, and declared dead. However, he’s actually been taken into witness protection, and given a new name and life.

This is less of an explanation about why Bullseye killed Foggy than how Foggy could, potentially come back on the series… Particularly as the head of Marvel TV has already teased that Elden Henson will, indeed, be returning for the second season of the show.

That said, I wouldn’t get your hopes up. In the comic book storyline, we saw a classic ambulance speeding away, Foggy is pronounced dead, bodies or it didn’t happen situation. In Born Again we listened along with Matt to Foggy’s heartbeat as it faded away. Sure, it’s a superhero world and resurrection is part of the package. But here Foggy’s death was pretty definitive. It’s likely when Henson does return, it’s for a flashback or a hallucination type deal. Sorry, Fogheads.

And as for the why of it all? Without getting into spoilers, it’s fair to say that things are not as straightforward as they seem. Stay tuned, because Daredevil: Born Again is just getting started.
