In the midst of a packed episode of Invincible that included cameos from Robert Kirkman characters like Tech Jacket, The Astounding Wolfman, Brit (Jonathan Banks) and many more, one blink-and-you’ll-miss-it character has captured the collective imagination. That would be Business Baby, a character too good, too pure for this world.
Spoilers for Invincible Season 3, Episode 7 past this point. In the hour, an army of Invincibles (Steven Yeun) are attacking the Earth. So Cecil Stedman (Walton Goggins), head of the GDA (Global Defense Agency) calls in every hero he can. That includes the aforementioned characters, plus Best Tiger, Kid Thor, Cast Iron, Bolt, El Chupacabra… The list goes on. While many of these characters don’t get voice actors, and are either there as cannon fodder for the Invincibles, or to hold the line, it’s Business Baby who has drawn the most interest.
That’s because he seems to be merely a toddler with a briefcase — not a super-powered hero at all.
We’ve actually seen Business Baby before, at the funeral of the Guardians of the Globe in Invincible Season 1, Episode 3, “Who You Calling Ugly?” But there, too, the precocious tike didn’t say a word.
In this week’s episode, Business Baby is quick to join up with the global heroes to fight the Invincibles, and ends up taking on the one called Target Invincible alongside a giant, green superhero. That hero doesn’t seem to have a name (or an analogue in the comics, as far as I can tell), but the two sort of work like Colossus and Wolverine, if Colossus was big and green, and Wolverine looked like a slightly older version of The Boss Baby.
Business Baby comes to an ignominious end, too. He’s riding on the big green guy’s back, Target Invincible knocks them in the air, and then the big green guy lands on his back, smushing Business Baby. While it’s possible Business Baby survived — heck, this very episode Angstrom Levy (Sterling K. Brown) came back from having his head entirely flattened — we do see a spray of blood. Which seems to indicate that Business Baby has filed his last quarterly report.
RIP, Business Baby. Cookies may be for closers, but you were a real one.
