This week’s Invincible ends with a scene that isn’t just exciting for fans of the Prime Video series. It also sets up a rematch that has been years in the making, stretching all the way back to 2016. Spoilers past this point: The episode ends with the reveal of Conquest, a powerful Viltrumite voiced by Jeffrey Dean Morgan, about to fight Invincible, voiced by Steven Yeun. And if you’re a fan of The Walking Dead, you know what that means… Glenn’s about to finally get some serious payback from Negan.
To give a little — well, a lot — of context here, both The Walking Dead and Invincible are co-created by Robert Kirkman. And plenty of Walking Dead alums have already made their way to the animated series. Most notably Yeun, who has played the title role, and previously played the doomed Glenn Rhee on TWD. Ross Marquand, who played Aaron for multiple seasons of TWD voices Rudy and Immortal, among other characters. And Lauren Cohan, Sonequa Martin-Green, Michael Cudlitz, Lennie James, Chad L. Coleman, and Khary Payton have all done voice roles on Invincible, as well.
However, Morgan hasn’t appeared on the show, until now. He previously played Negan on TWD, introduced in the Season 6 finale during the infamous “lineup” scene. In case you’ve blocked the horrifying jumping off point for the show from your memory, in it Negan makes our heroes get on their knees, and explains he’s going to bash their brains in, one by one. While he does kill Abraham (Michael Cudlitz), the death everyone remembers is him pummeling poor Glenn, eyes popping out and innards spilling all over the ground. I wasn’t exaggerating when I called it a jumping off point — when you ask folks “when did you stop watching The Walking Dead?” they’ll almost invariably say when Glenn died.
Speculation about Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s involvement on the show bubbled up way back in January of 2023 when the actor posted a picture of himself on Instagram with Invincible Compendiums, Volumes 2 and 3, with the caption, “Doing a little light reading.”
Early speculation was that Morgan would play Emperor Thragg, the big bad of the series and the leader of the Viltrumite Empire. He’s not, though… Morgan is the voice of Conquest, an extremely powerful, extremely deadly Viltrumite soldier. And if you thought Mark’s fight with the Alternate Marks in this week’s episode was bad… Get ready for the Season 3 finale.
What Happens In The Conquest And Invincible Fight, In The Comics?
As a general reminder, the show is different than the comics, and has often tweaked or changed things in ways, big and small. But if this does play out in a similar way, boy is it going to be satisfying for Walking Dead fans.
Without going beat by beat here, in the book, as in the show, Conquest arrives to tell Invincible to put up or shut up. He was supposed to prepare Earth for a Viltrumite takeover, which Mark did not. So now he can step aside or die, with Mark at the end of the episode choosing to fight Conquest… Which Conquest is all about.

Over the course of the massive fight, Invincible gets multiple limbs broken, Oliver (Christian Convery) almost gets torn in half, and Eve (Gillian Jacobs) does get torn in half. Don’t worry, she has a way out of that, which you may be able to figure out if you watched the Atom Eve Special. But the kicker here that I, personally, am hoping happens is that Invincible essentially head-butts Conquest to death. While it might not be a barb-wire bat, seeing Glenn bash Negan’s head open (it’s Mark bashing Conquest, but go with me here) will be ridiculously satisfying.
And not to get further into spoilers, but like a lot of characters on Invincible, getting head-butted to death is just a momentary set-back for Conquest. You’ll see more of him going forward. Still: justice for Glenn is coming.
