With a title like Heaven, West Virginia you might have an inkling that things are not so idyllic in the new Oni Press graphic novel by Ravi Teixeira. And you would be right.
In the book, Lamont arrives in the small town of Heaven, and takes up foraging, tea-making, and other soothing activities with his aunt. Only problem? In the woods is an enormous figure with long teeth and piercing red eyes watching the town — and Lamont.
“Lamont is me, Lamont is you, Lamont is my own father and his father, and anyone who has struggled with losing someone they couldn’t love, and who couldn’t love them,” said Teixeira via press release. “HEAVEN, WEST VIRGINIA is my love letter to finding love when you’ve been denied it, being haunted by your past, and the rolling hills and lush, ancient forests of Appalachia.”
The publisher describes the book as “A singular and seductive meditation on the complexity of grief, healing, and the power of the natural world.” You can check out a look at the book below (click for larger versions of the images), and pick it up in bookstores on November 11, 2025.
