‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Pays Tribute To The Late Kamar De Los Reyes: “In Loving Memory”

While the first episode of the new series Daredevil: Born Again began with the shocking death of a major character, Episode 2 kicks off with a far more real, far sadder tribute. As the episode begins, in white text on a black screen, it simply reads, “In loving memory of Kamar de Los Reyes.”

If you’re wondering what that’s all about, de Los Reyes plays the role of Hector Ayala, aka the superpowered vigilante known as White Tiger. Spoilers for the episode past this point, but on New Year’s Eve Hector — out of costume — sees two people beating up a third man on the subway platform at 168th Street. He tries to break them up, and in the process one of the bullies trips and falls in front of an oncoming train. To make matters worse, the man who dies is an undercover cop. Hector gets arrested, and of course Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) takes his case on… Eventually discovering that Hector is White Tiger, complicating matters further.

Kamar de Los Reyes will appear as Hector Ayala/White Tiger again in next week’s (March 11) third episode of the season, so there’s more to come with the character. But sadly, the show is airing posthumously, as de Los Reyes died of cancer on December 24, 2023, at age 56.

Before his passing, de Los Reyes had participated in a number of projects, including the video game Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, where he played the role of Barranca. That 2024 game also included a tribute to him, as well as also departed co-star Tony Todd.

What’s most remarkable about his inclusion here, which we said “impresses as a conflicted and earnest vigilante” in our review of Daredevil: Born Again, is that they were able to include so much of de Los Reyes before he died. Production of the first season began in March, 2023. By the time it was halted due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA and WGA Strikes in June of 2023, the Marvel Studios production had filmed most of six episodes.

Filming didn’t restart until January 2024, after de Los Reyes had passed. And due to a creative overhaul including a new pilot and additional scenes, most of the nine episodes that hit air have been revamped in major and minor ways. Everything with de Los Reyes’s Hector was filmed in the previous iteration of Born Again that otherwise does not exist. That he was not just given an in memoriam card at the start of Episode 2, but is also granted a complete, satisfying story arc (including next week’s episode) is a tribute to the outstanding performance the actor gave before his untimely passing.
