Read An Exclusive Excerpt From Vera Brosgol’s First Novel ‘Return To Sender’

Return to Sender Vera Brosgol

Vera Brosgol is a critically acclaimed bestselling author and illustrator for her graphic novels like Anya’s Ghost, Be Prepared, and Leave Me Alone. But the lauded creator is branching out with Return to Sender, her first novel (non-graphic variety) — and Comic Book Club has an exclusive excerpt for you of the first chapter of the book.

Don’t worry, Brosgol isn’t giving up her comic book roots any time soon. The new book, which hits May 6 from Macmillan, features gorgeous illustrations throughout, as she tells the story of, per PR provided to Comic Book Club, “a magical and mysterious mailbox grants wishes and takes two kids on a surprising adventure.”

Written for ages 8-12, the book is somewhat inspired by Brosgol’s own desire to have a genie lamp, after her family emigrated from the Soviet Union to the US at age 5. The author is also known for her film work, including on Coraline and Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, and of course for her most celebrated work, her appearance on Comic Book Club’s live show one time. Just kidding about that last part.
