Jon Bernthal is officially returning as Frank Castle, aka The Punisher, in the upcoming series Daredevil: Born Again. But that won’t be the last time you see him in the role, as he’s getting his own MCU one-shot special, co-written by Bernthal himself.
As first reported by EW, the one-shot will be in the vein of Werewolf By Night and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, aka an extended special episode, versus an ongoing series. And in addition to Bernthal, the special is being co-written and directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green. Why is that a big deal? Well, Green also worked with Bernthal on the critically acclaimed HBO series We Own This City, a dirty cop drama based on the book of the same name.
While that’s pretty much all the news we know at the moment — the idea for the special came about once Bernthal signed on to reprise the role he played on Daredevil and The Punisher spin-off series — this may be the first of many continuations of the previously non-canon (or disputed canon) Netflix projects. With Marvel looking for more multi-season shows, reportedly they’ve been exploring the idea of bringing back other heroes like Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist.
Meanwhile, Daredevil: Born Again premieres March 4 on Disney+, and a second season for the series begins filming later this week.
