It’s the penultimate episode of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, and some big things are going down in Episode 9, “Hero or Menace.” Wondering who’s who in the episode? You probably should know by now, but hey, we’ll break it all down for ya anyway! We’re your friendly neighborhood voice cast explainer-man!
First though, a recap of the episode to provide context, and spoilers past this point. Things kick off with Dr. Otto Octavius in prison, reading — and criticizing — the Sokovia Accords. He’s interrupted by Norman Osborn, who has come to gloat that he’s stolen all of Otto’s tech, and despite Otto swearing revenge, it looks like Norman has won. Heck, Norman is planning on taking his company into space!
Over to Otto’s warehouse, though, Big Donovan and the 110th Street Gang, including Lonnie Lincoln, are scoping it out. Big Don wants to distract the cops, Lonnie isn’t so sure. But when the cops leave with the contents of the warehouse, the gang chases them down and knocks the trucks off the road, nearly killing Nico Minoru… Who is saved by Spider-Man in his classic costume.
What follows for the bulk if the episode is a pretty killer extended fight scene. Spidey takes down the 110s. The Scorpion and his gang shows up. Big Don gets scared and runs away. And as the 110s fight the Scorpions, and Spider-Man fights THE Scorpion, Lonnie goes into the Oscorp truck to find something that can help.
What Lonnie does find is a canister of DIOX-3, a gas which accidentally gives him super-strength and invulnerability. And it also leads to a team-up with Lonnie and Spider-Man, as they take down The Scorpion. But you just can’t keep Mac Gargan down… He drops a slew of construction materials on Lonnie, which makes Spider-Man lose it, remembering how Osborn told him to let himself go and stop holding himself back.
At the last second, when Spider-Man is about to kill The Scorpion, Lonnie emerges and stops him. With Gargan webbed up, it’s time for Peter to apologize for keeping his secret identity from Nico (after she punches him in the face) and they agree no more secrets. Though Nico does have one more, as she gazes at her necklace.
Things end with Norman and Peter talking on the phone, with the former giving the latter a pep talk. Norman has his own agenda, though… Not only have his scientists been developing Goblin Gliders, and something with the intern program, but they have Peter’s blood, and are injecting it into a spider. When Norman told Peter on the phone, “I wish we had one hundred Spider-Men,” I guess he meant it literally.
