We’ve already met Jeanne Foucault (Anjali Kunapaneni) on Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. But there’s a lot more to the Oscorp intern than there seems to be, as revealed in the final episode of Season 1. Spoilers past this point, but as comic book fans suspected: yep, Jeanne is actually the costumed adventurer known as Finesse. And in a surprising twist for the series, she’s also Daredevil’s (Charlie Cox) sidekick.
In YFNSM, we’ve seen Jeanne working with fellow interns Amadeus Cho (Aleks Le), Asha (Erica Luttrell), and Peter Parker (Hudson Thames). But back in the episode “Duel With The Devil” it became clear a little something else was going on, as Jeanne was caught sneaking into Norman Osborn’s (Coleman Domingo) office by Peter. In that same episode, we saw Daredevil seemingly breaking into Norman’s office… But as revealed in the finale, it was actually Jeanne who was doing the breaking in; and she was working for Daredevil the whole time.
They briefly talk in an alleyway in the finale, Jeanne puts on her costume, is called “Finesse” by the Man Without Fear, and they race off over the rooftops. That’s it for the two of them in Season 1, so whatever the YFNSM take on the characters is, is TBD. Yes, it sure seems like Finesse is Daredevil’s sidekick — but she’s got a lot more going on in the Marvel Comics source material.
Who Is Finesse In Marvel Comics?
Created by Christos Gage and Mike McKone, Finesse was first introduced in 2010’s Avengers Academy #1. The title spun out of (no Spider-Man pun intended) the events of the Civil War crossover, with a 50 State Initiative looking to properly train the next generation of heroes. That included the next generation of maybe villains, which includes Finesse.
Why is that? Well, Finesse was raised to be the best of the best by her parents… But her real father may be Taskmaster. The straight-up baddie has the ability to mimic anyone else’s moves, and it seems like Finesse may have those abilities, too. She’s able to mimic the move-set of anyone, and beyond her natural athleticism has mastered multiple martial arts. Basically think Olympic-level athlete, but for every event, and you get the idea. She’s also kind of a jerk about it, and often clashes with heroes like The Wasp.
However, someone she has not clashed with in the comics is… Daredevil. And in fact, other than her inclusion in a few universe-wide crossover events, Finesse has no relationship with Matt Murdock in the comics. That’s totally new for the TV show. So whether the YFNSM version of Jeanne Foucault is related to Taskmaster, or just a very athletic person is to be seen.
