While some movies may be premiering their trailers at the Super Bowl, Superman knows you gotta go for the Big Game, aka the Puppy Bowl. And thanks to a Krypto the Superdog themed event, we got a good look at the pupper in some new footage from the movie.
And we say some new footage because rather than the Krypto-focused footage some fans thought was coming, the teaser shown off during the Puppy Bowl is virtually the same as the trailer dropped online previously, with a few quick frames of new footage of Superman flying, and one split-second additional shot of Krypto. If you missed the Puppy Bowl live, you can stream the event on Max, which includes the “new” teaser trailer at approximately 44 minutes and 44 seconds.
Directed and written by James Gunn, the new movie’s version of Krypto is inspired by Gunn’s own dog, Ozu. A rescue dog the creator adopted while working on the new Man of Steel movie, this version of Krypto isn’t necessarily the good boy comic book fans have grown to love. Instead, he’s a bit of a mutt with a tendency to rip apart couches and cushions… Only also with the powers of Superman. Yikes!
And in fact, if you’re let down by the trailer shown during the “game,” at about 13 minutes in, Gunn himself sits down with Ozu to reiterate how important it is to adopt rescue dogs, and how having the pup changed his life — as well as the upcoming Superman movie.
The human stars of the movie are David Corenswet as Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. The movie also stars Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner (aka Green Lantern), Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Maria Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, and more.
This isn’t the last you’ll see of Krypto, either: the dog is central to the plot of the currently filming Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, starring Milly Alcock as the titular character.
Superman premieres in theaters on July 11, 2025.
