Jason Aaron’s Original Pitch For ‘Batman: Off-World’ Included Ideas For A Sequel

Batman Off-World #6

While the title may have taken a little longer than expected to wrap up, Batman: Off-World #6, the finale of the DC Comics series, is in stores today. Written by Jason Aaron with art by Doug Mahnke, the book found Batman heading to space in order to figure out how to beat an impossibly strong alien that took over Gotham. And spoilers past this point, while Batman does return and beat that alien, in the closing pages we get to see how the dangerous Slag Galaxy he’s been living in has turned into what one could refer to as the Bat Galaxy.

So, given this wide-open status quo, would Aaron return for more stories featuring Batman… In… Spaaaace?

“I would love to,” Aaron told Comic Book Club. “Once you read the end of that story, you see how I leave things. It’s definitely a state where there could be more stories to be told there. And actually, my original pitch for Batman: Off-World had had ideas for Batman: Off-World 2.”

So, what would be involved in a potential sequel series? Aaron explained that it “would be another flashback story” and would involve “more characters that we see in this one.” Batman would be involved, despite getting more settled with his role in Gotham City, but everything else is new alien characters.”

While Aaron is now firmly ensconced in DC Comics thanks to the best-selling Absolute Superman, Batman: Off-World was his first time writing Batman, and his first full limited series for the publish.

“I loved getting to play with different alien races from the DC cosmology, getting to write a Thangarian for the first time,” Aarron continued. “And and the story is very much a love letter to Atari Force and Omega Man and New Teen Titans, and bunch of the books that made me fall in love with comics in the first place. So I would love to do more of that.”

As mentioned above, the six-issue series did take a while to come out. The first issue hit in November of 2023, followed by two monthly issues, before skipping to April of 2024, then August, and finishing up today, in 2025.

“It’s too bad that the there were so many delays with the book, but it’ll certainly make a nice looking trade now,” Aaron noted. “Those things were unavoidable. There was a lot of real life issues that came in the play with the creative team. But I think everybody did really beautiful work on it, [it’s an] utterly gorgeous book.”

Batman Off-World #6 is in stores today.
