ALA Youth Media Awards announced.

This is Comic Book Club News for January 29, 2025.

Spawn Universe Expands With Medieval Spawn, Black Ritual: The Book Of Nyx:

The Spawn Universe is spawning once again, with two new miniseries: Black Ritual: The Book of NYX and Medieval Spawn.

The first book is a seven-part series written by Spawn Editor-in-Chief, Thomas Healy, and drawn by returning Spawn artist Nat Jones. Picking up after the events of Spawn #184, we’ll discover how the former She-Spawn Nyx made her way from her origins, to becoming the Queen of Hell. It will hit stores on April 2.

Medieval Spawn, meanwhile, will be written by Rory McConville and drawn by Marco Itri, and focus on the origin of Sir Jon of York, the man destined to become the Olde Timey-iest Spawn ever. The mini will run four issues, and debut on April 23.

BOOM! Studios To Leave Diamond Earlier Than Expected:

BOOM! Studios is leaving Diamond Comic Distributors earlier than expected. While the publisher was planning on transitioning to Penguin Random House as their primary distributor on July 1, given Diamond’s recent bankruptcy declaration, the transition will now happen on April 1.

Per ICv2, while PRH will be the primary distributor for BOOM! Studios, Diamond will “continue to solicit and distribute BOOM! Studios titles as a PRH sub-distributor in April and beyond.”

So for most places, business as usual. However, this does point to the accelerating nature of the situation around Diamond’s bankruptcy. We’ll have more on this as it develops.

ALA Youth Media Awards Winners Announced:

The American Library Association has announced this year’s winners of the Youth Media Awards, including many graphic novels for younger readers.

Per The Beat, Brownstone by Samuel Teer and Mar Julia won the Printz Award for Excellence in Young Adult Literature, about “a girl getting to know her father while they work on fixing up a building over a long summer.” And Lunar Boy by Jes and Cin Wibowo won the Stonewall Award for best LGBTQIA+ book.

Other winners include The Deep Dark from Scholastic Graphix, Ten Speed Graphic’s Big Jim and the White Boy by David F. Walker and Marcus Kwame Anderson, Lara Pickle’s I Feel Awful, Thanks, from Lion Forge and Oni Press, Navigating with You by Jeremy Whitley and Cassi Riberio from Maverick and Mad Cave Studios, and Lunar New Year Love Story by Gene Luen Yang and LeUyen Pham from First Second.

Congrats to all the winners!
