TMNT: The Last Ronin Tops 2024 Graphic Novels Sales:
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin hardcover collection, which hit stores in July of 2022, was the best-selling graphic novel of 2024.
This marks at least the second year in a row that The Last Ronin has topped ICv2‘s overall list, and possibly third as full data for graphic novels in 2022 was not available online. That’s pretty huge, and points to the enduring popularity of the book.
Number two on the list was Something is Killing the Children Vol. 1, with the more recent seventh volume also hitting the Top 20.
Marvel’s Ultimate Spider-Man Vol. 1, which has been dominating the monthly charts since release, came in at number three. And DC’s Compact Comics were huge in 2024, snagging slots four through seven.
Other highlights include the actual best-selling graphic novel of the year — as ICv2’s list only includes sales at comic book stores — Dog Man, Volume 12, as well as both the Invincible Digest Edition Volume 1 and Invincible Compendium Vol. 1 both hitting the charts. And rounding things out at number twenty, another IDW hit: Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees.
Dark Horse Cuts Ties With Neil Gaiman:
Dark Horse Comics has cut ties with writer Neil Gaiman, after multiple allegations of sexual assault and sexual misconduct came to light earlier this month.
In a statement posted on BlueSky, the official Dark Horse account said: “Dark Horse takes seriously the allegations against Neil Gaiman and we are no longer publishing his works. Confirming that the Anansi Boys comic series and collected volume have been cancelled.”
Adapted by Marc Bernardin, with art by Shawn Martinbrough, colors by Chris Sotomayor, and letters by Jim Campbell, the adaptation of Gaiman’s Anansi Boys was planned as an eight issue release, with the final issue hitting on March 5. The trade collection would have hit over this summer.
In fact, Bernardin posted the news nearly a week ago on Instagram, announcing that the last issue would not hit stands, and neither would the trade.
While Gaiman is best known for his comic work with DC and Marvel, he has an extensive catalogue with Dark Horse, including three volumes of the Neil Gaiman Library, and at least 13 graphics novels including Harlequin Valentine, Snow, Glass, Apples, and the unfortunately titled How To Talk To Girls At Parties.
Thus far this is the first comic book publisher to release a statement on Gaiman, though Marvel shared with Comic Book Club that they don’t have any current work with Gaiman, nor any future plans with the writer. We’ve additionally reached out to DC for comment, but did not receive a response as of recording time.
BOOM! Studios EIC Matt Gagnon To Leave Company:
BOOM! Studios Editor-in-Chief Matt Gagnon is leaving the company, after 14 years as EIC, and 17 years total working for the publisher.
Per The Beat, this seems to be Gagnon’s choice to leave, and not part of a larger restructuring of the company as it becomes more integrated with new parent Penguin Random House. Said Gagnon in a statement: “A truly epic journey that started for me in 2008 at the age of 27 now finds me at 44, much changed and feeling so grateful for the legacy I’m leaving behind. The time is right for me to turn the page.”
While no successor has been announced, Gagnon will be leaving the company on March 1, so expect more news, soon.
