In a rare case of “you got my peanut butter in your peanut butter,” two franchises that it’s surprising have never been jammed together before are getting jammed, hard, this April: Red Sonja vs. Army of Darkness is coming from Dynamite.
Written by Tim Seeley, with art by Jim Terry, you may be surprised — no, stunned — to discover that the book finds Ashley J. Williams thrust through time and space, and teaming up with the She-Devil with a Sword. You also will find your jaw dropping when you discover that Kulan Gath gets his hands on the Necronomicon.
“I’ve been obsessed with AoD since I saw the movie way back in 1992 — in fact, the first Hack/Slash story began life as a pitch to get the rights for AoD for comics!,” said Seeley via a press release provided to Comic Book Club. “Having Red Sonja teamed with Ash, a character I know really well, lets me really emphasize her badass feminist qualities, as Ash is an often befuddled sexist idiot.”
Also of note, while not specified in the press release, based on previous discussion about Army of Darkness with writer Tony Fleecs (who works with Seeley on the excellent Local Man), Dynamite has the rights to Army of Darkness, but not the entire Evil Dead franchise. This shouldn’t impact the comic in any way, but it’s just a weird, fun fact!
Red Sonja vs. Army of Darkness #1 will include covers by Seeley, Bjorn Barends, Mark Spears, and Nikkol Jelenic. Check them out along with unlettered pages, below. The title hits in April.
