Hot on the heels of the announcement that Dan Slott will be leaping small buildings in a single bound, aka heading from Marvel to DC to write Superman, DC Comics has pulled back the cape on their plans for the “Summer of Superman.” And that includes one-shot specials, graphic novels, and Superman Day at participating retailers.
It all kicks off with the Summer of Superman Special #1 on April 16, which brings together Slott, Mark Waid, Joshua Williamson and Jorge Jiménez for an over-sized 48-page special that tells, per PR provided to Comic Book Club, “a single story in three acts.” It all revolves around the wedding of Lana Land and John Henry Irons, as friends — and enemies — coalesce around the event, and “spawn major new conflicts for the Superman family.”
Along with a main and variant cover by Jiménez, the one-shot also features variants by Alexander Lozano, John Giang, Mahmud Asrar, and Dan Jurgens, and a Krypto variant by Chrissie Zullo-Uminga.

Then on April 23 is Superman #25, another oversized, 48-page issue written by Joshua Williamson with art by Dan Mora, Eddy Barrows, and Eber Ferreira. In the issue after the battles with Time Trapper and Doomsday… Lex Luthor is back, and ready to “fight for control of Supercorp and Metropolis.” Not only does it connect to the Summer of Superman Special, but it sets up a new storyline focusing on Lex.
Covers for the issue are by Mora, as well as Guillem March, Jeff Dekal, Rafael Grassetti, Dave Johnson, Laura Braga, and Fico Ossio, and an April Fools’ Day variant cover by Dan Hipp.

But wait, that’s not all! Superman Day will be held this year on April 18, aka the 1938 publication date for Action Comics #1. This year, participating booksellers, mass market, and online retailers will have All-Star Superman Deluxe Superman Day Edition hardcover, featuring a new dust jacket with art by Frank Quitely, and Superman Unchained Deluxe Superman Day Edition hardcover, with a new dust jacket featuring art by Jim Lee.
If dust jackets are too dusty for you, your local comic shop may have one of the following:
- All Star Superman #1 Special Edition by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely
- Superman For All Seasons Book One Special Edition by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale
- An excerpt of the upcoming young adult graphic novel Jimmy Olsen’s Supercyclopedia by Gabe Soria and Sandy Jarrell
- Action Comics #1 Golden Age–Size Facsimile Edition featuring an homage cover by superstar artist Dan Mora
Naturally, check to see if one of the above will be available at your local shop. There’s even more “Summer of Superman” to celebrate, though. Action Comics #1085 hits stores on April 9, beginning the two-part “Superman Superstars” story by G. Willow Wilson and Gavin Guidry — which also concludes the “Superman Superstars” branding. Per PR, “Lois Lane sends the Man of Steel to a scientific outpost in the Arctic to investigate a new technology that promises to halt global warming. But when Superman arrives, he quickly finds out that the outpost has been plagued by a villain who plans to melt humanity’s hopes for survival.”
The issue features a main cover by Brad Walker, with variant covers by Davide Paratore, Cully Hamner and Danny Earls. And who is following “Superman Superstars” on Action Comics? Hm, maybe there are more “Summer of Superman” announcements to come.

Also coming during the “Summer of Superman,” Superman: The World on June 24, following up on Batman: The World and Joker: The World. In the book, 15 international creators including Dan Jurgens and Lee Weeks launch stories about Superman from all over the, well, world. The book will launch simultaneously in Brazil, Mexico, Germany, Spain, Serbia, Bosnia, Montenegro, Turkey, India, Cameroon, Poland, the Czech and Slovak Republics, and Argentina.

And last but not least, the previously announced all-ages OGN Superman’s Good Guy Gang will hit stores on July 1.
The Summer of Superman also features the debut of Superman’s Good Guy Gang on July 1. The first in a multivolume series, this graphic novel is the perfect entry point for early readers ages 5–7 to discover the incredible world of DC’s Super Heroes. Superman’s Good Guy Gang is written and drawn by Death and Sparkles creator Rob Justus and introduces readers to an eight-year-old Clark Kent, and his super-powered friends Hawkgirl and Green Lantern, as they test their abilities, grow together and maybe even earn some good guy points along the way. Future books in the series will include popular DC Super Heroes Batman, Wonder Woman, Mr. Terrific and more.
