‘Captain Planet’ Returns From David Pepose And Eman Casallos In New Dynamite Comic Series

After tackling Space Ghost for Dynamite, David Pepose has his eye on something a little more terrestrial: Captain Planet, a new ongoing comic book series with art by Eman Casallos.

“Every comic creator has their own personal white whale — that singular property they’ve been itching to make their mark on — and for more than a decade Captain Planet has been mine,” said writer David Pepose via a press release provided to Comic Book Club.

In the reimagined series, five young people are chosen to “wield elemental rings of Gaia, the High Priestess of Earth. Each Planeteer suddenly finds themselves equipped with abilities aligned with one of the world’s elemental forces: Earth, Fire, Wind, Water, and Heart. And in the most dire circumstances, the five can combine these powers together to summon the globe’s greatest champion — Captain Planet!”

Casallos has redesigned the characters for the new series, including: Kwame (from Ghana, wields the power of Earth); Wheeler (from the US, channels Fire); Linka (from Russia, can manipulate Wind); Gi (from South Korea, controls Water); and Ma-Ti (from Brazil, uses Heart). Additionally, Captain Planet has a beard now.

Released on April 23 (just in time for Earth Day), the reimagined Captain Planet #1 will finds Gaia getting kidnapped, which forces the Planeteers to work together against the well-financed Lucian Plunder. True to form, Dynamite has noted that the issue will be printed on 70% recycled paper (though that’s true of all of Dynamite’s periodicals).

The first issue will feature covers by Mark Spears, Christian Ward, Ben Oliver, as well as connecting covers by Jae Lee and June Chung. You can check them out below, as well as unlettered pages by Casallos.
