Harley Quinn has been a popular character since her debut in 1992, thanks to being a great comic relief — and occasionally taking the time to explore deep and heavy themes. Her hit animated series by the same name delves into all that while expanding on her relationship with Poison Ivy, another fan favorite. With Season 5 debuting later this week, there’s no better time to dive into her world through some of the best Harley Quinn comic books.
In the books below — all from DC Comics, and available at your local comic book shop or online — you’ll find the usual chaos and fun from you love from the animated series, but also fresh and exciting angles, too. As always, comics are the best way to see new sides of a character you love. And while Harley may have started in animation (Batman: The Animated Series), she’s only grown more popular through the books.
So check out our list of five Harley Quinn comics you should read before Harley Quinn Season 5 hits Max.
Batman: Harley and Ivy

Writer: Paul Dini, Bruce Timm
Artist: Bruce Timm, Shane Glines
Harley Quinn’s story began with Paul Dini and Bruce Timm’s Batman: The Animated Series, so why not start with the duo in the comics, as well? The two reunite for DC’s best girlfriends’s newest escapade. It’s a fun laid-back comic that makes the most of Harley and Ivy’s dynamic.
Harleen

Writer: Stjepan Šejić
Artist: Stjepan Šejić
We all know the origin story, but Harleen takes a brand new, out-of-continuity deep dive into her life as a psychologist that will get you on the edge of your seat. Knowing her journey only amplifies your love for the character, as you can’t help but empathize with her more and fear the path she’s going upon meeting the Joker. It’s not surprising many fans say this is a masterpiece.
Harley Quinn (2013-2016)

Writer: Jimmy Palmiotti, Amanda Conner
Artist: Chad Hardin
One of her best solo runs, Harley Quinn (2013) brings on all the chaos and craziness you know and love. Our favorite anti-hero gets a fresh start by moving to Brooklyn and becoming a roller derby queen. If being a hero while balancing a normal life is hard, imagine doing that while maintaining your criminal career.
Gotham City Sirens

Writer: Paul Dini
Artist: Guillem March
Some of DC’s most iconic female characters—Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, and Catwoman—team up to form an unforgettable trio. The character moments are incredible and every issue is hilarious and action-packed.
Suicide Squad (2016-2019)

Writer: Rob Williams
Artist: Jim Lee, Jason Fabok
While the Gotham City Sirens are great, Harley’s most popular team is the Suicide Squad, so we couldn’t finish this list without one of their best runs. Williams creates some fascinating stories that make full use of the whole squad, like The Black Vault and Burning Down The House. And Jim Lee and Jason Fabok on art? Great stuff.
