With Creature Commandos done as of today’s season finale, there’s one, big, dangling question: what’s next? When it comes to animated shows, next up is Harley Quinn Season 5, which fills the virtual time slot for Creature Commandos, debuting on Thursdays starting next week. But what about what’s next for the DCU?
The answer is that at this point… Not a lot. Or at least, not a lot that we know is 100% confirmed, as of yet. You’re probably well aware of the next project, Superman. But beyond that, there are scant live-action projects, and even less on the animated front.
With that in mind, let’s talk about what we know is happening for sure in the DCU and related projects from DC Studios; and what we also know is definitely in the works in some capacity.
What’s Next From DC Studios? Superman, Supergirl, And Some Lanterns
As mentioned the next release from DC Studios, which kicks off the live-action portion of the DCU, is Superman. That premieres in theaters on July 11, 2025, is written and directed by James Gunn, and stars (among other folks) David Corenswet as Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.
Following quickly on its heels in August is Peacemaker Season 2 on Max. This once again stars John Cena in the role he played in The Suicide Squad and the first season of Peacemaker, now canon with the DCU.
Jumping to 2026, we’ve got another Kryptonian headed to the big screen with Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. This stars Milly Alocock as Supergirl, Jason Momoa as Lobo, and is based on the comic by Bilquis Evely and Tom King. It will hit theaters on June 26, 2026, and as of this writing is beginning production shortly.
Lanterns, a live-action, eight-episode Green Lantern series is also heading to production shortly. It stars Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre as Hal Jordan and John Stewart, and according to Gunn begins the main story of the DCU. He’s also noted that the plan is to have it debut on HBO around the same time as Supergirl, though an exact date in 2026 is TBA.
Also in 2026, we’ve got Clayface, a live-action movie written by Mike Flanagan and… That’s all we got on that one at the moment. It hits theaters on September 11, 2026.
There are only two other productions with dates, both of which are not part of the DCU: The Batman Part II hits on October 1, 2027; and the animated Dynamic Duo hits theaters on June 30, 2028.
What’s Else Is In The Works For The DCU?
Here are some selected projects that have been talked about in some capacity, but we don’t know where they are production-wise. The first I’ll call out is Creature Commandos Season 2, which has been greenlit by Max, but is very much TBD when it would debut.
Waller, a spinoff TV series starring Viola Davis, has been discussed a lot, but does not seem to be in production or close to as of yet; though perhaps now that Peacemaker is wrapping up, that crew could move on the the companion series.
Paradise Lost, a series focusing on Themyscira, seems like a no-brainer given the events of Creature Commandos. But it was mentioned when James Gunn announced the DCU well over a year ago, and we haven’t heard much since. A Booster Gold TV series was also discussed, but apparently the scripts are not quite there yet. And back in June of 2024, there was some discussion of a Blue Beetle animated series.
On the movie side, scripts we know are in the works in some fashion, though there’s been no official go-ahead from Gunn, are Teen Titans by Supergirl writer Ana Nogueira, Swamp Thing written and directed by James Mangold, The Authority by TBD, and The Brave and the Bold directed by Andy Muschietti.
There are plenty more rumors and scuttlebutt you can search for yourself, but there you go! The future seems murky for the DCU for now, but surely it’ll become clearer the closer we get.
