Creature Commandos Season 1 is officially in the books, with a season finale, “A Very Funny Monster,” that neatly wraps up the action of the series. No pun about the mummy who appeared in the finale there, by the way. Regardless, though, you might be wondering when Creature Commandos Season 2 will premiere, for more monster-fueled DCU shenanigans.
Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. While no official Season 2 premiere date has been announced for Creature Commandos at this time, we’ve got a fair bit of educated speculation to work off, based on production schedules and other factors. So let’s get into it.
Has Creature Commandos Been Renewed Or Canceled? Will There Be A Creature Commandos Season 2?
Yep, Creature Commandos has indeed been renewed for Season 2 by Max. In fact, the streamer announced the renewal as an early Christmas present on December 23. While there have been no official viewership numbers shared as of this writing, writer and DC Studios chief James Gunn may have indicated one of the big reasons the show was picked up: viewing improved.
“CC has gotten more popular from episode to episode because of the positive discussion around it and has cultivated an enthusiastic audience,” Gunn said on X. “If we had dropped all the episodes at once who knows what would have happened. I will likely always be in the one-a-week camp for our shows. For people who want to binge all at once they can wait until the end of the season.”
Point being, yes, there will be a Creature Commandos Season 2. The question is, when?
When Will Creature Commandos Season 2 Premiere On Max?
So let’s discuss how this would normally work, and then we can lay out some factors that make Creature Commandos a particularly singular entity when it comes to guesstimating when Season 2 will premiere. More and more in the modern era of animation, by the time we publicly hear about a renewal the upcoming season has already been worked on for a while; or the initial season was already made with a double episode order, and split into two “seasons.”
This happens in live-action as well, occasionally (particularly crafting scripts or assembling a writers room that may or may not pan out into an additional season). But the reason to do this for animation is, it takes a long time to make a season of animated television. Normally, the rule of thumb is that it takes at least a year and a half to make an animated season, though more often, it’s about two years. So by the time Season 1 is released, Season 2 is already in progress so that the show can keep to a yearly release schedule.
Creature Commandos, unless they have been secretly working on it for a while, is going to take a lot longer to arrive. The reason is that James Gunn wrote the scripts for the first season, on spec (meaning without a contract) before he was hired as the head of DC Studios. As of November 18, 2024, Gunn and Dean Lorey had discussed the second season but seemingly had not moved forward as it would depend on Gunn having time to write the scripts.
…So if Gunn hasn’t even written the scripts yet, we’re basically starting from zero. And in addition to whatever else Gunn is doing, he’s now running DC Studios. Currently, he’s finishing up and getting ready for the release of Superman. He’s working in various capacities on Peacemaker Season 2. And there’s whatever else he has cooking up, TBA. Maybe one of those TBA things is making time for writing another season of Creature Commandos, maybe not. If it is, we’ve got about two years from whenever he finishes them to see the release. That means Creature Commandos Season 2 likely won’t debut until 2026, earliest.
A perhaps more likely possibility is the ridiculously busy Gunn may step back a bit. He already expressed enjoying writing the scripts and then passing them to Lorey and company to take the football down the field. Even if Gunn ends up providing an outline and then Lorey and staff write the rest, we’re still talking about a 2026 debut date at the soonest. If Gunn insists on writing all the scripts, maybe longer.
The other factor? The ongoing story of the DCU. While Gunn has said that every project is essentially standalone, it is part of a greater universe. Right now, we only really know about Superman, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, the HBO show Lanterns, and Clayface as DCU projects. Where Creature Commandos Season 2 will fit in there? Who is to say? Not I!
That all said? Pure speculation here, but I’m guessing we’ll see a push from Warner Bros. Discovery to have the second season come out sooner, rather than later. Waiting two to three years between seasons of an animated series risks losing a lot of the audience. Is there a chance the show could come out in late 2025, or early 2026 to keep to a yearly schedule? Maybe? But that would depend on it secretly already being in the works, as mentioned. More likely, we won’t get the show until late 2026… And only if Gunn jams through the scripts, or passes them off elsewhere.
