‘Creature Commandos’ Finale Kills One Major Character — And Brings Back Another

Creature Commandos season finale

Creature Commandos Season 1 is a wrap. And while there will be a Season 2, the final episode, “A Very Funny Monster,” found us saying goodbye to one major character… And hello to another. Spoilers past this point, but the final episode killed off Nina Mazursky (Zoë Chao), and brought back a jacked up G.I. Robot (Sean Gunn).

Let’s start with Nina first, a real bummer if there ever was one. In the flashback for this episode, we discovered Nina’s back-story. And despite online speculation that she was really a merciless killer… She’s actually always been as nice and demure as we saw on screen during the series. She was born with her lungs outside her body, turned into a fish-woman by her dad, and then… Arrested for being a fish-woman. She doesn’t have a bad bone in her body, and it’s only when she’s peer pressured by the rest of the Commandos to kill Princess Ilana (Maria Bakalova), her first violent act, that she’s brutally stabbed and killed.

Mostly, her death is there to likely show who the real monsters are (it’s humans, in case that wasn’t clear over the past seven episodes), as well as motivation for The Bride (Indira Varma) to kill Ilana later on. It’s also a particular bummer as Chao seemed very excited to be joining the DCU when she was talking about the character back at New York Comic Con. Alas, the only thing she’ll be portraying in live-action is fish food.

But James Gunn taketh and he giveth back, as well, as in the closing moments of the episode, G.I. Robot returned. After getting blown to smithereens by Circe (Anya Charlotra) back in Episode 3, he’s alive in Belle Reve, with a much larger body, ready once again to kill some Nazis. You can’t keep a good robot down, I guess, and likely G.I. Robot will appear in an upcoming Creature Commandos Season 2… Probably only to get destroyed, and rebuilt again. It also means we could see more of his connection to Dr. Will Magnus (Alan Tudyk) and the Metal Men in a future season, which could be neat. Heck, maybe they could turn Nina into a fish-robot?

…Probably not. But with the DCU just getting started, anything is possible, so we’ll keep holding out hope for Chao’s sake.
