After seven weeks of creatures and commanding, Creature Commandos has wrapped up with the season finale, “A Very Funny Monster.” And Episode 7 still had a few surprises when it comes to the Creature Commandos voice cast… Including — spoilers past this point — King Shark.
Before we get to the voice cast, though, a recap of the season finale.
The previous episode (“Priyatel Skelet”) ended with everyone converging on Ilana’s castle in Pokolistan. On one side are The Bride, Doctor Phosphorus, Nina Mazursky, and Weasel, heading to kill Ilana to ostensibly save the world from her eventual reign of terror. On the other side is… Well, just Eric Frankenstein, who is going to stop them from killing Ilana, and prove to The Bride once and for all how awesome he is. Meanwhile, back in America is a comatose Rick Flag Sr., a non-comatose Amanda Waller, and John Economos, who is also not in a coma. In fact, most of these characters are not in comas. True story!
Oh, one last detail of setup. Weasel conflated his memories of a little girl he failed to save in the past with Ilana in the present… So don’t be surprised later on when the feral anti-hero gets a little confused.
Okay, on to the episode proper. Our flashback of the week is Nina Mazursky’s origin story. To break that down in order, though it plays out throughout the episode, Nina was born with her lungs outside of her body. Luckily, her father Edward Mazursky was a scientist who specialized in this sort of thing. He built a suit to help Nina breathe. While Nina grows up happy, if not healthy, her mother Lily Mazursky can’t take the stress of having a special needs kid. She wants to take Nina off the machines and let her die, but Nina’s father refuses – so Lily leaves.
Years later, Edward develops a technique to transform Nina’s DNA… And turns Nina into the fish-girl we know and love. She can’t breathe outside of the water, but she can breathe… So he enrolls her in school. Naturally, the kids all make fun of her for looking like a frog. After she finds a frog in her locker at school she heads to the sewers, strips off her clothes, and embraces being the creature they all think she is.
Again, years later, a man takes a picture of Nina eating a fish. The police capture her, and when her father tries to push his way through the crowd to save her, they shoot him to death. Yikes!
Back in the present, the Commandos break into Ilana’s castle. Looking through security footage, they see something monstrous with Ilana, confirming their suspicions that she’s up to no good. That’s when Frankenstein arrives, and wasting no time, The Bride proceeds to shoot him several times and spit on him, seemingly killing Frankenstein. Because of the shooting, not the spit. To be clear.
“Paramour of yours?” asks Doctor Phosphorous, to which The Bride quips, “Can it, Ghost Rider.”
Meanwhile, back in America, Flag wakes up from his coma and reveals that MacPherson, the college professor who specializes in Themyscira who told them that Circe was clairvoyant, isn’t who she says she was. So Waller and Economos head to MacPherson’s house and find the fallout of the fight Flag and Frankenstein had with Clayface. That includes a seemingly dead Clayface and the rotting body of MacPherson. Waller realizes they’ve been tricked, and they need to contact the Commandos and stop them from killing Ilana.
While all this has been going on, Ilana is taking a nice swim as she does every morning, despite the warnings of her guards. With her glorious swimming hole (phrasing) surrounded by soldiers, The Bride realizes the only one of them who can get close enough to Ilana to kill her is Nina. Because she can swim under the surface of the water. To convince Nina, who has never killed anyone in her life, she tells her that she’s a “monster, like us.” And to drive it home, they tell her, “You’re the biggest freak of us all.”
As Nina swims under the water with a knife, she draws ever closer to killing Ilana, and as she’s seemingly about to strike the final blow… Weasel loses it. He wades into the water, screaming, to save Ilana (who remember, he thinks is the grown-up version of the little girl from his past). That alerts Ilana to Nina’s attack. They fight underwater, Ilana gets control of the knife and stabs Nina several times, killing her.
The Bride sees Nina dead. As the remaining Commandos are surrounded by Pokolistan soldiers, Sergei, Ilana’s second-in-command, brings a phone to The Bride. It’s Waller, and she simply says, “We’ve made a mistake.”
Having seemingly sorted everything out, the Pokolistan soldiers are celebrating Weasel as a hero, but something doesn’t sit right with The Bride. She goes to see Ilana and explains that the monstrous figure she glimpsed on the tapes was Clayface. Then in classic mystery fashion, Detective The Bride lays it all out:
- First Ilana seduced Flag to get him on her side.
- Then Ilana suggested killing Circe, but Flag refused.
- Ilana sent one of her Knights to spy on the Commandos and saw the real MacPherson visiting them.
- Ilana knew that MacPherson would back up Circe’s vision of the future, so she recruited Clayface to make it look like MacPherson “wasn’t who she was,” says The Bride, “even though she was who she said she was when she and Waller spoke.”
So in fact, yes, Ilana was a power-mad dictator bent on destroying the world and tried to confuse the situation to save her own life.
As Ilana readies a gun and The Bride does the same, the latter explains that she’s going to kill her not because she’s going to cause World War III… But because Ilana killed her only friend, Nina. The Bride shoots Ilana in the head, killing her, and then making a quick exit with Weasel and Doctor Phosphorus. As they walk away, The Bride cries.
But wait, that’s not all! Back at Belle Reve, Economos explains that The Bride really saved the day, and they “converted one of the abandoned wings for you and your team.” If she wants, she can lead her own team including Weasel, Doctor Phosphorus, a rebuilt G.I. Robot, Nosferata, Khalis (a mummy-type villain from the classic Creature Commandos comics), and King Shark (the version from The Suicide Squad).
“Well, you in?” asks Economos. “What else I got to do?” shoots The Bride right back.

We won’t reiterate who is in the main voice cast (you can check out previous breakdowns for that), but let’s start with probably your biggest question: was that Sylvester Stallone as King Shark? And the answer is: no, it is not. Instead, the former Suicide Squad member is voiced by Diedrich Bader. Bader has held dozens of roles, but you may know him as the voice of Batman on Harley Quinn and Batman: The Brave and the Bold, or as Harvey Dent/Two-Face on Batman: The Caped Crusader.
Gregg Henry plays Edward Mazursky, Nina’s dad, and James Gunn fans likely know him best for playing Jason Quill, aka Star-Lord’s grandfather, in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. He also voiced Brother Blood in the animated Teen Titans: The Judas Contract and played Agent Martin Proctor on seven episodes of Black Lightning.
Joy Osmanski, who voices Nina’s mother, Lily Mazursky, also has a DC past: she played Paula Brooks, aka Tigress on The CW’s Stargirl. She also played Jing Harris on Duncanville, and is the voice of the Failsafe AI in Destiny 2.
Sunkrish Bala, who plays Hallway Jerk 2 and Police Officer 2, previously played Dr. Caleb Subramanian on The Walking Dead and Vikram Singh on Castle. Anjali Bhimani is Assistant 2 and Principal, and she previously did voice work on X-Men ’97 and Mech Cadets. However, you may know her from live-action on Ms. Marvel, where she played Aunt Ruby.
Chris Cafero, who voices Assistant 1, Hallway Jerk 1, and Police Officer 1, is an NYC-based comedian who played David Morrison on four episodes of Inventing Anna. Allegra Clark, who plays Lacrosse Bitch (that’s one for the resume) and Obstetrician has worked extensively in English dubs including playing Hana on Dandadan.
Rounding out the new cast for the episode, Lawrence Jay Gilligan plays Reporter, a role he also played in three episodes of Deputy. And Mike McGlone is the voice of Embassy Official, though you may know him as the Rod Serling-esque spokesperson for Geico.
