‘The Penguin’ Season 2 Discussion Heats Up With “Quiet Conversations”

Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobb in the Penguin

Hot on the heels of Colin Farrell winning the Golden Globe for Best Actor for portraying Oz Cobb in The Penguin, one of the show’s EPs has confirmed there have been “quiet conversations” about a possible second season for the series.

Speaking with TVLine at the Globes, Executive Producer Dylan Clark said, “If we could come up with an idea for what a second season might be, there’s a chance that [HBO CEO] Casey Bloys and the HBO team would want to pursue that. There have been quiet conversations about that.”

This certainly lines up with what we’ve heard before about a possible second season for the DC Studios series, though the language is far more teasing than what’s been used previously. Showrunner Lauren LeFranc has repeatedly noted that they wrote the show as a limited series, and while she would always be open to more because she loves the world, they would need a good story. That continued on the Globes carpet, where she essentially said the same thing she’s been saying for months now.

Matt Reeves, the director of The Batman and overseer of The Batman Epic Crime Saga, however, was even more bullish about the possibility when talking to The Hollywood Reporter, also at the Globes. Said Reeves, “Well, we are talking about doing another season. Lauren and Dylan and I and Colin are talking about what we would do. And it’s really about coming up with the right idea and also about the timing. You know, we’re doing The Batman Part II and so how all of that fits together. But we’re really excited about doing another season and we’re just going to have to figure out exactly the right idea.”

While that’s nothing definite, the follow-up question here is: when? When will those quiet conversations that are happening publicly on the red carpet for an awards show (don’t tell anyone!!) start to spill over into reality?

To throw a little cold water on this, I’ll note that The Penguin began development in 2021, and due to a variety of circumstances didn’t hit HBO until 2024. It was meant to serve as a bridge between The Batman and The Batman Part II, the latter of which is now supposed to hit theaters in 2027. While it’s possible there could be a second bridge season to plug that gap, it’s far more likely that a second season of The Penguin would take place after The Batman Part II hits theaters, placing it in 2027, or far more likely 2028 at the earliest.

That’s all speculation of course, and maybe HBO and DC Studios will fast-track a second season of The Penguin to keep that gravy train rolling. But given the meticulous care Reeves and company have taken with this franchise so far, I’d doubt we see Farrell back in the suit (and hat) any time soon. Until then, they’ll just be discussing it. Quietly.
