Marvel Teases Ultimate Universe Event For Free Comic Book Day:

Marvel is teasing an Ultimate Universe event for this Free Comic Book Day. And not only that, but perhaps a new status quo for Ms. Marvel, as well.

In unlettered pages provided by the publisher, we’re looping back to a key moment from Ultimate Invasion #1 where Miles Morales and The Maker — the evil Reed Richards — chatted before the latter created the new Ultimate Universe. So will Miles play a key role in the upcoming Ultimate Incursion event? Seems likely!

Meanwhile, the X-Men Free Comic Book Day book loops back to the Uncanny X-Men’s origins, and teases someone who is there who shouldn’t be there. That’s likely Ms. Marvel, as seen in the recent Timeslide #1 special. So will Ms. Marvel be retconned into the continuity of the X-Men’s second genesis?

We’ll know more on Free Comic Book Day, on Saturday, May 3.

Art Spiegelman Explains Gaza Comic With Joe Sacco:

Over the holidays, Maus creator Art Spiegelman created a bit of an uproar when he revealed he’s been working on a comic about Gaza with Joe Sacco, who previously created comics Palestine, Footnotes in Gaza, and more. Specifically the uproar surrounded Spiegelman noting that he didn’t think they could find a publisher for the book. Well, turns out, it’s not a book at all; it’s a three-page story that Spiegelman and Sacco have been working on for months.

As Spiegelman told Bleeding Cool, “That rumor is based on my response to an audience member at a Q&A… When asked about what I was working on now, I explained that I was, at that moment, in the middle of a 3-page comix collaboration with Joe Sacco distilled from a few long phone conversations we had about Gaza… I naively didn’t realize my comments would be reported on or inflated into describing an epic-length work that I wouldn’t be able to finish before the Messiah comes. As it is, those three pages we made took months and will now be submitted by our agents looking for a suitable venue.”

So there you go! Not censorship of a hot-button issue, so much as finding a home for a three-page comic book story is difficult.

John Ostrander’s Suicide Squad Gets An Omnibus:

John Ostrander’s defining run on Suicide Squad is getting an omnibus from DC Comics.

Per ICv2, the 1,008 page volume will include 18 issues of the anti-hero team’s title, as well as multiple other books including issues of Checkmate, Manhunter, Justice League International, The New Teen Titans, as well as multiple entries from the Who’s Who of the DC Universe.

The book will sport a cover by Howard Chaykin, retail for $125, and be released on May 20, 2025.
