In 2021, Amazon’s Prime Video released the first season of one of their best series, Invincible. From its premiere episode, we could see the vast potential of this superhero universe. It’s aware of the genre’s tropes and improves them with well-written characters. But it also has a brutality that lingers in your mind, which is partly responsible for the show’s popularity.
Invincible‘s fights frequently have an impressive brutality and goriness… And in the wake of those scenes, a building tension or an unexpected abruptness follows. By contrast, the series can use tiny details and sentimentality to create scenes even more surprising than the brutal ones.
The show is full of memorable and compelling moments. So, without further ado, with Season 3 debuting in February and more jaw-droppers to come, let’s check the 11 most shocking moments in Invincible… So far.
11. Atom Eve’s Real Family
When It Happens: Atom Eve Special, at 36:36
Atom Eve’s origin story is depressing from its first moment. But, when she meets her family — the failed attempts to create another version of her — it hits rock bottom. The kids are constantly on the brink of death, but they are forced to serve as pawns to capture their sister. It’s very tragic.
10. Omni-Man Destroys The Flaxans
When It Happens: Season 1, Episode 2, at 41:03
While Omni-Man’s objectives are still unclear, this is one of the show’s first hints that he’s not quite the good guy we’ve been told he is. He eradicates a civilization without batting an eye and returns home to have dinner. Even though he saves Earth, his behavior isn’t as heroic as it seems.
9. Omni-Man Kills Immortal… Again
When It Happens: Season 1, Episode 7, at 46:40
This is shocking both for its gore and for revealing to the world who Omni-Man really is. No one expects that he will simply chop Immortal in half for everyone to see. It’s only not higher on this list because we already saw this happen in a similar way, in the first episode.
8. Omni-Man Returns
When It Happens: Season 2, Episode 3, at 45:07
We all knew Invincible needed to meet his dad, Omni-Man, again after their intense battle in Season 1. But the timing was a complete surprise. When they see each other again, his father is a changed man living a new life with a different family. It’s so unlike what we last had seen, it throws us — and Invincible — for a loop.
7. Evil Mark Snaps Atom Eve’s Neck
When It Happens: Season 2, Episode 1, at 7:45
The evil version of the hero is a common trope in alternative dimension stories, but this scene is a bit darker than usual. As Atom Eve doesn’t want to join Invincible in taking over the world, he breaks her neck and leaves her paralyzed. Now, he can be forever with the woman he loves, while her only means of resistance is crying. The act gets more vile as we learn he had been practicing the move on innocent people before trying it on Eve.
6. Battle Beast Vs. Invincible
When It Happens: Season 1, Episode 5, at 38:10
Battle Beast is one of the series’s strongest characters. He trashes Black Samson, Monster Girl, and Invincible in minutes. And there’s a feeling of satisfaction and theatricality when he beats Invincible, making it even more shocking. We also have another hint of Omni-Man’s true self, as he silently watches everything from afar.
5. Allen The Alien Almost Dies
When It Happens: Season 2, Episode 3 at 19:41
Allen is very charismatic, so it’s heartbreaking seeing three Viltrumites beating him. The scene also reaches new levels of gore, with them cutting off one of his arms and striking with such strength his eye pops out. Thankfully, we get almost immediate relief, as he is shown being nursed back to health later on.
4. Rex Vs. The Lizard League
When It Happens: Season 2, Episode 6, at 1:00
The Lizard League seemingly kills some of the new Guardians of the Globe, leaving Rex Splode for last. Just as he thinks he avenged his teammates, the enemy leader surprises him. Before we can even think “How is Rex going to get out of this one?” he headshots the hero. It’s even more surprising when Rex gets up later and beats the villain, before collapsing again.
3. Mark Kills Angstrom Levy
When It Happens: Season 2, Episode 8, at 20:45
A bloodbath. That’s the only way to describe what happens here. After Invincible and his family are tormented by the baddie, he loses it and repeatedly smashes Angstrom Levy’s head. The protagonist’s breakdown later is even worse, beating himself over doing something unforgivable. He isn’t the same after that, and it’s depressing to watch the trauma affecting him.
2. Omni-Man Kills The Guardians Of The Globe
When It Happens: Season 1, Episode 1, at 43:45
This scene changes everything. Omni-Man, the biggest hero on Earth, betrays and murders his teammates. It comes out of nowhere and sets the tone for everything coming next. Despite its brutality and mercilessness, this still isn’t his worst atrocity…
1. The Train Massacre
When It Happens: Season 1, Episode 8, at 13:32
After Omni-Man reveals his true nature to his son, he causes an inconceivable amount of death and destruction. The first season’s finale is so full of shocking moments that it’s hard to choose one. But the final straw is him using Invincible’s body to slaughter innocent people on a train. It’s so brutal, Mortal Kombat uses this moment for Omni-Man’s Fatality.
