I’m going to be perfectly honest up front: I was not looking forward to Deadpool / Wolverine #1. Coming half a year after the Marvel movie, even with an excellent creative team (that would be Benjamin Percy and Joshua Cassara) this seemed like too little, too late. Add in the fact that while it’s special to see the title duo on screen together, they’re pretty much always hanging out in the comics… This just seemed to be yet another book in the pile.
Well, paint me wrong on this one, because Deadpool / Wolverine #1 rocks.
Yes, the issue hits all the notes you would expect. Deadpool quips a lot. Wolverine is hanging out in a bar, getting into a fight. Spoilers past this point, but is there a secret plot involving the Weapon X program that brings in Maverick? Of course there is. Yet Percy knows how to set the table the way you would expect before pulling the tablecloth out from under you. And instead of leaving the place-settings intact, they all come crashing to the floor.
To say more is to give too many spoilers, but the issue builds in weird, wild, and violent ways that don’t necessarily change what you would expect from the Wade/Logan relationship… But it’s much more than just playing the hits.
Cassara is the perfect partner for this, too. This is big, gross, bloody action that you would expect from two nearly immortal merciless murderers… Particularly as the duo know from experience that they can’t hurt each other permanently; but they can hurt each other.
There’s a fantastic villain reveal, some bizarre set pieces, and a mystery about the Weapon X program that — shocker — isn’t just another scientist making more Wolverines. At least, that’s not where we’re going as of yet.
All in all, an excellent start to a series that I was not, at least, planning on continuing reading. Now, I can’t wait for issue two. Let’s f**king go.
