After months — maybe years? — of rumors and fancasting, it’s official: Jason Momoa will play Lobo in DC Studios’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.
The news was revealed by the former Aquaman actor on Instagram, where he included an excerpt from an old interview noting his interest in the role. “So Lobo was… I collect comics, and I don’t do so much anymore, but he was always my favorite, and I always wanted to play Lobo, because I’m like, ‘Hello? It’s the perfect role. I mean listen. If they call and ask me to play him, it’s a f*ck yeah. I haven’t received that call, so I don’t want to put any fake news out there, but if they ever call me and ask to play or ask me to audition, I’m there.”
Accompanying this Instagram post? The caption, “They called.”
The news was later confirmed by a variety of sources revealing that not only is Momoa headed from the DCEU to the DCU as Lobo, but he’ll be appearing in the upcoming Supergirl movie, which begins filming shortly.
Based on the comic book series by Bilquis Evely and Tom King, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow finds the title character, played by Milly Alcock, headed on a cosmic adventure in pursuit of a villain called Krem of the Yellow Hills (Matthias Schoenaerts), with a young partner named Ruthye Marie Knolle (Eve Ridley). The movie is written by Ana Nogueira, and directed by Craig Gillespie.
Curiously, though the book does take place in space, aka Lobo’s usual home, the Momoa character does not appear in the comic book source material. How he’ll play into the movie, therefore, is TBD.
Production on Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow begins on January 13, 2025, for a June 26, 2026 premiere date. You can see Momoa’s Instagram post, below.
